About this property

Amidst the Monte Tizio hills in the rolling countryside of Umbria you will discover Castello Poveromo. With mountain walking trails, pretty hamlets and bustling medieval towns and cities within easy reach, this stunning castle is the perfect place to stay for a special trip with friends or family.

This is a beautiful, exclusive home which also happens to be an authentic medieval castle, originally constructed in the 12th century by Frederick Barbarossa the Holy Roman Emperor which has seen many battles throughout the centuries.

Around 20 years ago, the castle was rescued from near-ruin and restored by skilled architects and interior designers using local materials and traditional techniques to create the incredible home which stands today.

As you approach the castle via the private road you will pass through the 5 hectares of grounds which surround the home. The vast, 4-floor castle is a wonderful sight to behold and when you head indoors the sumptuous décor, tapestries and antique furnishings will transport you back to a bygone era. The living and dining rooms are the heart of the home where your party can come together to make memories over meals prepared by the amazing chefs, paired with a glass of wine from the castle’s own wine cellar.

There are 8 bedroom suites to choose from at Castello Poveromo spread over 3 floors. Each bedroom has an antique super-king-sized bed and an individual design and colour scheme to create the most calming and decadent space for your nights sleep. You will also find a sitting area in each suite and a bathroom, a number of which have beautiful bathtubs, perfect for a soak at the end of the day. If this doesn’t sound relaxing enough, the house also has its own spa with a massage space and a Turkish bath and spa treatments and massages can be arranged on site.

The owners have thought of everything so that your stay is as comfortable as possible and therefore the house has all you need including Wi-Fi, TVs, underfloor heating, a spa, gym and a professional kitchen. In addition, there is a concierge, chefs, maid service and spa staff available.

The gardens of the castle are a lovely oasis surrounded by mountains and lush green farmland. You can look out over the Tiber valley and over to Assisi and Perugia in the distance while sipping your morning coffee. The garden has lots of little cosy nooks with outdoor sofas, dining terraces, lawns lined with trees and of course the inviting pool.

If you want to dine out one evening then the nearest restaurants can be found around 5-10km away dotted around the countryside, while the nearest village Ponte Pattoli is 8km away by car and has a range of shops and places to eat.

Umbria has lots to see and do and nearby you will find the vast Antognolla golf estate which is 6km away. On top of an 18-hole golf course you will find walking trails, tennis, mountain biking, a luxurious restaurant and a spa, so there is something for everyone.

If you are looking for a day exploring historic buildings and soaking up the art and culture of the region then Perugia is 15km away and Assisi is 38km away, both are great places for a day trip. Also, though the home is located inland, you are still able to spend a day at the beach at Lake Trasimeno which is 28km away.

Castello Poveromo is located in the Monte Tizio hills in Umbria which is known as the green heart of Italy and as you look around at the rolling fields, mountains and woodlands it is easy to see why. Umbria is a lovely place for a holiday exploring authentic Italy as you can find unspoilt countryside and pretty historic towns to visit all around this region.
The home is rurally set which is ideal for getting away from it all and making the most of the astonishing castle and the vast grounds where you are sure to want to spend plenty of time relaxing by the pool or dining al-fresco with your party. You will not be entirely cut off when staying here however and if you wish to head out for a meal there are a range of restaurants dotted around the countryside between 5-10km away, often serving authentic Umbrian cuisine in a quiet rural setting. The closest village is Ponte Pattoli which is 8km away from the villa and has a good selection of eateries and shops.
When you are looking for a wider range of shops and restaurants and want to take in some of the art and culture of the area then head to Perugia, the capital of Umbria which is a mere 15km drive from the villa. In under half an hour you can be in this bustling historic city with lots to see and do. Start at the main square, the stunning Piazza IV Novembre to see some of the key sights such as the Palazzo dei Priori. You can also visit the cathedral, a number of museums and the incredible National Gallery which is packed with Renaissance art works and fascinating exhibitions of ancient jewellery and sculptures. You can visit Perugia countless times and still stumble across something new each time you wander the maze-like streets. It is also a lovely place to grab lunch while soaking in the atmosphere. If you visit during July then Perugia is home to a fantastic world famous Jazz festival.
Another must-see location is the town of Assisi which is 38km away. The town is a unesco World Heritage site and is known as the birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Basilica built to honour the saint is a must-see and is filled with breath-taking Renaissance frescoes. A great way to see the Basilica as well as Roman sites, ancient churches and hidden gems around town, is by taking a walking tour with a knowledgeable guide.

For something a little different to do when visiting Assisi, why not take an Umbrian cookery class or take part in a wine and oil tasting in a farm just outside of the town? Assisi looks especially beautiful when the sun goes down and the buildings are lit up so stop for dinner in a local trattoria while visiting.
If you want to spend some time outdoors in nature then hiking and cycling routes from the villa are within easy reach. You may also fancy visiting the fantastic Antognolla golf resort which is 6.5km or heading to Lake Trasimeno which has some gorgeous lake beaches and is 28km from the house.
