Castle Howe is a cosy and well-equipped cottage in the peaceful Rosthwaite, ideal for walking enthusiasts and those seeking a tranquil retreat. Guests appreciate the stunning views, local walks, and wildlife. While some cleanliness and maintenance issues are noted, the overall experience is positive, with many planning return visits.
Reviews indicate that cleanliness is generally satisfactory, but there are concerns about dust, dirty floors, and kitchen hygiene. Some guests found the property well-cleaned, while others needed to clean upon arrival.
The location is highly praised for its beauty and convenience for walking, with guests loving the proximity to nature and local amenities. It is considered one of the best places in the Lake District.
The cottage is described as cosy and comfortable, but comfort is compromised by an uncomfortable king-size mattress. The underfloor heating is appreciated, although there were issues with temperature control in the bedroom.
Facilities are generally well-regarded, with a well-stocked kitchen and good heating. However, there were reports of issues with underfloor heating and a gas fire, and suggestions for maintenance improvements.
While guests mention thoughtful touches like bird feeders and a well-stocked bookshelf, there is no mention of gifts, so it is not possible to score this category. Guests should note that such personal touches, while appreciated, are not guaranteed.

This was our third visit to Castle Howe and we really enjoy the access to many of the walks we used to do in past years when visiting the area. The cottage is cosy, comfortable and well equipped. We found the kitchen, especially the oven very clean. We were a little worried before arrival because of the negative reviews on the website. We cured the problems of overheating that some had encountered, but alas the comments about dirty floors and carpets was justified. On arrival the wooden floors were very dusty throughout and the carpet in the lounge area was filthy. My wife set to with the vacuum which I doubt had been put to use at all, and after a good clean all was well and the carpet was in effect a nice shade of blue. Despite this, the positives, especially location and warmth, mean we'll return and have already booked for next year, but we hope the vacuum will have been busy before we come!

Excellent cottage

Excellently placed for walking. Local facilities are irrelevant to me as I live remotely and travelling 6miles for milk is not an issue. Be prepared for having to drive for shops. A few local places to get food and drinks without driving but everything you need to cook with is there. It was quite novel to have a butter dish - I usually take my own 😜. Very comfortable cottage with great views. Lots of birds visit the feeder in the garden if you like birds for entertainment. TV small but who goes away to the lakes to sit in front of a tv anyway - certainly not me but that info is there for you anyway. I did look to rebook next year but booking wasn’t available. I’d definitely recommend 👍😃
