Acorn Cottage is a charming property praised for its tranquil location, with direct access to local walks and stunning scenery. Guests appreciate the cottage's cosy atmosphere, comfortable beds, and well-equipped kitchen. The garden is enjoyed by those with pets, though shared spaces require consideration. Some guests mention minor maintenance issues and the remote setting may challenge some, but the overall experience is one of peaceful retreat and natural beauty.
The cottage generally receives positive remarks for cleanliness, with guests finding it clean and well-presented. However, there are comments about specific items needing attention, such as kitchenware and the oven, which slightly lower the score.
The location is highly praised for its beauty and tranquility, with easy access to walks and nature. The remote setting is seen as a positive by most, though the access road is noted as narrow. The peacefulness and proximity to attractions in the Lake District contribute to a high score.
Guests find the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, especially with the woodburner. Some mention the limited headroom in top bedrooms and the seating arrangements as minor discomforts, but overall the cottage is seen as comfortable.
Facilities are generally good, with a well-appointed kitchen and comfortable furnishings. However, issues with the shower, heating, and Wi-Fi are recurrent themes, and some guests feel that maintenance could be improved.

This stunning terraced cottage sits in a row of eight properties that were once owned by author Beatrix Potter, in a wonderful elevated position, within the Bakestone Barrow Wood, nestled between Coniston and Little Langdale in the Lake District. Acorn Cottage is a spacious, beautifully designed, three-storey property in a tranquil, yet central location, ideal for a family or group of five wanting to enjoy a getaway to the Lake District. Enter the property into the sitting room, filled with stunning features, from original flagged flooring to a feature fireplace housing a woodburning stove, while the sofas and armchair offers a selection of relaxing places to sit and enjoy a book from the shelves that are built into an alcove, or to watch a programme on the TV or to simply admire the countryside view. The well-equipped kitchen/diner has the same original flooring, a former feature fireplace, sleek granite worktops and all the modern conveniences you could wish for, including an integrated dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer, while the dining area provides a space for the whole group to sit down and enjoy meals together. Head up to the first floor to find a bright and spacious king-sized double bedroom, decorated with neutral tones, with plenty of storage and lovely window seat from which to admire the view; this floor also houses a family bathroom with a shower over bath and a further shower room with walk-in shower, so you can choose how to prepare for each day. The second floor features two further bedrooms; a generously-sized single with double glazed Velux window and plenty of storage, along with a double bedroom with built in wardrobes and a Velux window. Outside there is off-road parking for two cars and a spacious garden with a lawn and a patio area, a real sun trap, with a picnic bench, perfect for enjoying breakfast and lunch outside on a sunny day, along with a lockable private shed where you can store bikes. The village of Coniston is three miles from the cottage, with several restaurants, pubs, shops, as well as The Ruskin Museum attraction. Acorn cottage is ideally suited for walkers of all ages and abilities, with many low and high level walks straight from the cottage door and for the serious and not-so-serious road cyclists and mountain bikers, who too can explore the many routes from the door. Walkers will relish the challenge of hiking up The Old Man of Coniston and enjoying picturesque views of Coniston Lake from the top, while the lake itself offers plenty of pretty walking trails, and why not travel in style on the National Trust's Steam Yacht Gondola?. Explore the vast woodland of Grizedale Forest, (for mountain and gravel bikers the Northface Trail is not to be missed) and the picturesque Tarn Hows, while the National Trust-owned Hill Top, the former home of Beatrix Potter, and the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead offer a glimpse into the author's life along with Esthwaite Water, thought to be the inspiration of much of her work, along with that of poet William Wordsworth. Bowness-on-Windermere and Lake Windermere are slightly further afield, where you can climb Orrest Head, and enjoy sweeping views across the lake and the fells beyond, visit Windermere Jetty, a museum of boats, steam and stories, and wander the grounds of the National Trust's Wray Castle, a 19th century Victorian neo-gothic house open to the public all year round. Make Acorn Cottage with its central lakes location the tranquil base for your next Lake District holiday.
The scenic village of Coniston is surrounded by lovely Lake District National Park scenery, making it a superb base for touring. Located at the head of Coniston Water, nearby tourist attractions of Hawkshead, Ambleside, Windermere and Grasmere are all just a short drive away. There are superb walking, mountain biking and climbing opportunities on Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam, with lovely woodland trails at Grizedale Forest. For watersports enthusiasts, the quiet lake is ideal for dinghy sailing and canoeing, whilst the less active can enjoy a leisure cruise on the beautiful steam yacht 'Gondola’. Nearby attractions include the award-winning village of Hawkshead, home of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin, Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the country and Esthwaite Water, famous for its fishing. A first class holiday location at any time of the year.
