Alternatively, lace up your boots and step straight out to follow a footpath up to Todd Crag, 0.5 miles away. Stride further on to reach Loughrigg Fell, 2.5 miles away. The National Trust's beautiful Stagshaw Gardens and the picturesque waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force are both a 1.5-mile walk from the cottage. Other beauty spots well worth visiting include the National Trust's splendid Tarn Hows, 5 miles away, and the dramatic Cathedral Cavern, 4 miles away. Coniston Water, with its walks and scenery, is just 7 miles away.

Let yourselves into the cottage via the front door. Hang your coats and leave your boots before taking four steps down to find yourselves in the hallway.
