On first arrival we were so happy with this cottage. It’s packed full of period features and character, with stunning windows and views and a really beautiful garden. In reality however it is quite run down and dirty. Many of the floorboard upstairs feel unsafe and have exposed nails. There were cobwebs everywhere. We live in an old building at home so know this is a problem but some of these have clearly been there for a long time and all it would take was a thorough clean. Cobwebs were on the mantelpiece, the chair legs and on lamps. They stuck to our clothes. Also behind the chair in the twin bedroom there was a pair of dirty underwear covered in dust from a previous guest I would imagine. This just showed a total lack of care and cleaning effort. Who knows how long they have been there? There is a damp patch in the main bedroom in the left hand corner and after a night of rain the became wet to the touch. We were also quite disappointed at the customer service level. We have stayed in many cottages in this area before and maybe we have been spoilt or lucky but have always recieved at least bread and milk on arrival, there is nothing to welcome you at Wilfin beck. Also there is zero local information provided, as I said we have been to the area a few times so know good places to go but if you are first timers it would be really helpful to put some local pub and restaurants recommendations, walking routes and amenities etc. I felt the same about wood for the fires every other property we have stayed in with open fires provides at least 1 additional bag of logs this was not the case. These small gestures just make the experience feel more welcoming and make such a difference to guest experience. The range in the dining room was out of use and as this trip was for my husbands birthday this was one of the appeals of the cottage. I really feel we should have been informed this was out of use just as a courtesy. Speaking of which a card from the electric company was left on the dining table telling us power would be off from 9am-4pm on one of the days we were staying. Again would it not have been polite for the hosts to text and apologise for this inconvenience? In all honestly I have stayed jn nicer cottagss for better value than Wilfin beck and would not stay there again or recommend.

We came to this house 11 yrs ago and love the quiet and very peaceful location. It is a lovely old house with a huge Lakeland garden with lovely walks down to Lake Windermere or up into the forest. The furnishings are regal and a place to live in forever. Ideally you need your own car
