Ulverston 7.2 miles. The Old Cottage is a characterful old-and-new cottage in the quiet hamlet of Oxen Park, Cumbria, enjoying views of Morecambe Bay and The Old Man of Coniston. Over 300 years old, yet seamlessly blending contemporary living with original features such as exposed beams and wooden doors and furnishings, this pet-friendly home invites a couple to escape to the stunning Lake District National Park. On arrival, through the old metal gate, a path leads round to the left where you can access the cottage into the hall. Parking is available at the roadside or directly in front of the Manor House pub just before the short lane to the cottage. Stepping inside the cottage, the kitchen rests in the newer side of the cottage, with views over the fields towards Morecambe Bay, and is home to all the appliances you could need for a self-catering break, as well as a handy washer/dryer, should you find your walking gear needs a refresh. From here, steps lead into the old side of the cottage and into the ample dining room, where you can enjoy home-cooked meals or plan your days out at the table. Moving through the home, the cosy sitting room includes an arm chair, rocking chair and sofa along with a Smart TV and decorative cast-iron range (no longer in use unfortunately). Finishing off the ground floor is a shower room and cloakroom, providing plenty of space to freshen up. Climbing the stairs, you’ll find a welcoming double bedroom to rest in, along with a dressing room and sofa next door. From the doorstep, you can find the upmarket restaurant, Manor House, the ideal spot for a celebratory meal with your loved one, or you can take the footpath from the garden to Bouth and its traditional-style pub, The White Hart (about 30mins walk). For watersports, you’ll be a short drive away from the peaceful Coniston Water, making for an idyllic walk or kayak. Or head to High Dam for a refreshing dip when the weather is good. Slightly further away is the bustling Windermere, where you’ll find a variety of shops and eateries, as well as equipment hire and the Windermere Steamers, if you prefer to stay dry whilst on the water! Foodies may want to visit the twin town of Bowness-on-Windermere, for an extra choice of restaurants. If hiking is more your thing, there are plenty of fells to explore in the area, or you can wander through the flora and fauna of Grizedale Forest a short drive north of Oxen Park. A truly charming retreat in the incomparable Lake District National Park, choose the Old Cottage for your next holiday.
