Super dog friendly place. Cafe bs restaurant food was very good. Don’t build any more cabins, less is more in this case. One word of warning, you have to bring your own towels, and there is no WiFi

We went as a family of four and a dog. Children aged 2 and 13. The caravan we stayed in was at gatehouse view. It was lovely, clean and well equipped. All we wanted was a fan for the heat but it wasn't possible. We were informed on arrival that the castle is closed the Mon Tues so we had to go off park for all foods/ things to do besides a walk around the site and the play park. The park itself was very well kept. All the staff were lovely and very helpful. We never got to try the chip shop as it was never open when we looked. The food in the castle was lovely but it was a pain ordering at the bar then finding a table you wanted to sit at as it was so quiet only one lady was serving and taking orders at the time. The bingo in the court yard was enjoyable. I didn't rate the singer when he came one night. The kids got bored by the end of the week - especially the teenager as there was nothing for him to do. We left to go home early. The soft play and play park was good for the 2 year old. But that's all. The games room was shut for renovation so couldn't be used by my 13yo. All he had to do was a pool table and air hockey but it kept breaking. Perfect for a quiet couples break or a couple with just very young children. Nothing was very clearly sign posted on site and it was a pain as the bins had to go beside the castle - quite a way from gatehouse view. We were off park every day exploring going to locomotion, digger land and Durham. Plenty to do in the area and go back to Witton as a quiet base. The park is peaceful and the weather was great so sitting on the balcony of the caravan with a brew was bliss. My kids just like to keep busy and don't appreciate the quiet life. Definitely much more tame than a centre parcs or haven site with little to zero onsite entertainment/ activity. We also went to South Shields beach which was a drive but worth it!! The site is great for dogs but you aren't told where you can or can't take them inside so we kept getting told off. They're only allowed in the cellar bar FYI. Not main castle or coffee shop. The walk to the nature reserve seemed nice but with a pram it was hard to go down the path so we gave up. The sat maybe kept trying to take ilis in the wrong way too so beware. Overall it was enjoyable but would have been better as a Fri to Monday stay than a mon-mon for us. We won't be going back but only as we've done all we want to there and in the area and will go elsewhere to explore. We would recommend though if you don't drag a grumpy teen along that expects great things.
