About this property

Approached along the coastal road from the village of Biggar, through the sand dunes of Walney Nature Reserve, 2 Lighthouse Cottage stands adjoining the Barrow Lighthouse, dating from 1805. Steeped in history, this holiday home was once the home of the lighthouse keeper and at one point, a barrack for soldiers manning the WW2 anti aircraft guns. This beautiful property now offers an immaculate finish with an open-plan living room on the first floor, making the most of stunning views across the wild exterior. Step through the front door and you are at the foot of the lighthouse, where a hallway leads to three wonderfully presented bedrooms. Each room has a TV, in case nature isn’t enough. The master, king-size double boasts an en-suite shower room with a large, double shower enclosure. There is one zip and link double room on this floor, giving you the option of a twin set up if you wish. The third bedroom has a luxury Ligne Roset sofabed and can be left as a sofa to give an extra sitting room (with TV and music) or turned into a very comfortable Kingsize bed. Both of these bedrooms will be set up for you as you wish. The family bathroom offers a gleaming, modern finish. Also on the ground level, a utility room houses a washing machine and a tumble dryer. Enjoy use of the fully fitted kitchen upstairs, with a dining area for family meals and a large corner sofa and separate twin sofa, enjoying the warm glow from the woodburner. Outside is ample off-road parking and miles and miles of sand dunes. Please note this is a nature reserve and there are restrictions on where you can wander and there is no access to the beach at this south tip of Walney Island. Why not take a trip to South Walney Nature Reserve, which is very popular with nature enthusiasts and is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Admire stunning vistas across Morecambe Bay and you may even be lucky enough to spot (and on quiet nights, hear) the only grey seal colony in Cumbria. The sunrises and sunsets are incredible here (weather permitting). It can be windy! Nesting gulls, eiders, oystercatchers and ringed plovers can be seen in summer, as well as many other seabirds. Make sure you look out for barn owls, short-eared owls and peregrines throughout the year. There are several way-marked walking trails, with points of historical interest and picnic areas to stop off and refresh. The nearest town is Barrow-in-Furness with a wealth of leisure and tourist attractions, as well as a range of cafés, supermarkets, bars and nightlife. Further afield is the market town of Ulverston, with something to offer everyone, including the famous Laurel and Hardy museum. This is a fabulous opportunity for you and the family, a different experience simply not to be missed! Note: This cottage can be booked with ref 968879 making a total of 8 people.

Walney Island is the 8th largest island situated off the coast of England. It boasts two nature reserves, sandy beaches and a range of pubs and restaurants. The area also has attractions and sporting activities available, such as Hollywood Park with its Superbowl, the award-winning Forum 28 theatre, the South Lakes Animal Park and a range of watersports.

The reserve is a Nature Reserve run by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and guests must respect that.

No dogs are allowed at the property or anywhere on the reserve, even on a lead.

When you are walking around on the reserve, you must keep to the paths, and don't go down onto the beach.

Never go onto the long Spit of land at the very end of the island (past the fence).

In the Autumn and Winter, huge numbers of wader birds use the beaches to rest, and it's vital they are undisturbed to save energy and help them survive the winter.

In the Spring and Summer, coastal birds nest here and must not be disturbed or harmed.

Some of the nests are hard to see and easy to stand on so please keep to the paths.

The reserve is monitored by a Warden and it is embarrassing for them, for guests and for us for visitors to be told off for roaming around where they should not be.

This is a bird watcher’s paradise.

No fireworks should be let off at the property and no drones should be used.

We also have neighbours and we ask that guests respect their privacy.

Note: A £200 good house keeping bond is required for this property, this will authorize us to deduct up to £200 after your stay from the account provided if the booking conditions are broken.
