A delightful, stone-built, semi-detached cottage on a working livestock farm in the rural hamlet of Milton, two miles from Brampton. Created from the careful, thoughtful conversion of an old dairy, this Milton cottage is tastefully decorated, with exposed crook beams, stonework, a woodburner and modern kitchen. A charming Milton cottage with accommodation all on one level, the property is further enhanced by a spacious main bedroom with exposed beams, and outside, a delightful decked area with countryside views. For those looking to tackle magnificent Hadrian's Wall, or explore the North Pennines, this is the ideal Milton cottage. Ideally placed for exploring northern Cumbria, the hamlet of Milton is close to all of the region's most popular attractions including Hadrians Wall, the Solway Firth coast and the Lake District National Park. The nearby market town of Brampton dates back to the Roman occupation, and shows evidence of attacks from Scottish border raiders and Jacobite uprisings. Apparently, the Scottish Bonnie Prince Charlie established his headquarters in one of the old buildings in Brampton, now a shop. Just a few miles away is Talkin Tarn Country Park, covering 180 acres - 65 of which make up the Tarn, a 10,000 year old glacial lake, fed by underwater springs. Slightly further south is Gelt Woods, an ancient forest along the banks of the River Gelt.

The stone barn is an excellent, cool place to stay for a hot week and we welcomed our return there every evening. Mabel was very helpful with her communication beforehand and generous in providing us with a map of the area on request. There are a few relatively minor things that might improve the quality of the stay for guests: - provide a full information pack, including local bus timetables and guide to appliances; - resolve the dripping taps in the bathroom and kitchen; - there is a washing machine, so please provide a washing rack or other means of drying clothes; - make every effort to enhance the wifi (I acknowledge that there may be local service issues) - review the kitchen and cooking equipment: there are items such as a rolling pin that are unlikely to be used, whereas a colander and more T-towels would be useful.

The Byre is especially dog-friendly with its enclosed garden and Miltonrigg Woods perfect for daily walks. The king size bed was notably comfortable and the TV big and clear. In spite of it being June the weather was cool and the made up fire was brilliant and much appreciated. The outside furniture on the decking was great for the one day of sun! Only a couple of very minor issues were a couple of dripping taps, a personal preference for a more powerful shower and some info on use of spa would have been good. Oh and a left opening fridge door if/when replaced perhaps. Overall clean, comfortable and well equipped and would stay again.

However, there were a few snags that merit mentioning. Firstly, there isn't "welcome" pack with instructions on how to use the cooker, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, shower or storage heaters. Also the few tourism leaflets in the property were very out of date - "What's On" for 2021, 2022 etc. Some of the takeaway menus were for local restaurants no longer trading. The hot tap in the bathroom washbasin was extremely loose and had to be controlled with two hands to prevent possible detachment from the pipe. A pool of water underneath the basin was also apparent from leakage. The taps in the kitchen area were also very loose and had to handled very gingerly. The mirror in the open plan area was very dirty but we cleaned that ourselves. There was a dirty, wine stained glass in the cupboard and no corkscrew or scissors in the kitchen utensils. Would we stay there again? Actually, yes we would. The negatives listed could be addressed very easily and the accommodation would be a lovely welcoming place for short stays. Martin & Mandy Ellison
