Site Description
Calthwaite Hall is part of our exclusive Bouja Luxury Breaks Collection. Uniquely set on the footprint of the barns used for a historic dairy farm and accompanying country house and gardens, this truly magical setting mixes historic country living with contemporary sophistication. Calthwaite maintains the traditions of a Cumbrian village with a local pub/restaurant serving traditional fare, real ales and roaring log burner alongside the old style estate sandstone village with church, primary school and worker cottages. The historic, gothic hall is at the centre of the village yet cleverly maintains the feeling of a hidden hideaway with formal lawned grounds and ornamental ponds designed by William Sawrey Gilpin, historic listed features such as the Portuguese Sweet Chestnut Specimen tree, hidden folly and veteran trees where cuckoos can be heard. No wonder the Howard family (of Castle Howard fame) previously used this as a country residence.

Don’t normally write reviews, but I think this deserves one. Firstly, the lodge was very nice, surroundings beautiful and within easy driving distance of numerous attractions. Was all this worth the money I paid….in a word, no it wasn’t. Firstly, check in time was 1700hrs, meaning we’d already lost a day. Check out time even worse, 0900hrs, so that day is gone too. A four night stay is actually two full days. The lodge itself as mentioned, very nice. Hot tub fantastic, kitchen, bedrooms, living area all lovely and clean. However, this is not a cheap lodge. In return I would have expected things to have been working. USB ports on plugs not working, in lodge speaker system not working, slat on bed broken, very poor shower pressure in main bathroom, no change of towels (constant use of hot tub obviously makes them wet), dish washer not working (luckily I managed to fix it), settee sunken, stains on carpets….I could go on. Went to the Globe Inn for dinner one evening. Lovely staff and a lovely place, food average, wine poor and expensive.Watch out for the requirement to give a £100 deposit too. This is to cover any damages, losses of cutlery / plates etc found on your departure. As mentioned above, the lodge was already riddled with damages so it was a constant concern if they would apportion blame of this to me. I personal took videos / pictures on arrival and departure to cover myself. The deposit was supposed to be returned the day of departure, by bank transfer, making taking a couple of days, but only once they had inspected the property. Obviously, you cannot be present for this because you had to leave at 9 o’clock so no chance to defend yourself. Unsurprisingly, I had to chase the return on this deposit up, nine days after departure. Nine unanswered phone calls and one Facebook message later, I managed to speak to with someone who to her credit, was very helpful and assured that she would immediately chase it up and twice assured me of a return phone call. A few hours later, the money appeared in my bank but no follow up phone call. All in all, I would not visit again and hence would not recommend. This is a real shame because it has the potential to be a stunning place to stay. Some efforts on presentation and definitely the deposit system would need to be improved if they are to justify the high price demand of stay.
