Calthwaite Hall is part of our exclusive Bouja Luxury Breaks Collection. Uniquely set on the footprint of the barns used for a historic dairy farm and accompanying country house and gardens, this truly magical setting mixes historic country living with contemporary sophistication. Calthwaite maintains the traditions of a Cumbrian village with a local pub/restaurant serving traditional fare, real ales and roaring log burner alongside the old style estate sandstone village with church, primary school and worker cottages. The historic, gothic hall is at the centre of the village yet cleverly maintains the feeling of a hidden hideaway with formal lawned grounds and ornamental ponds designed by William Sawrey Gilpin, historic listed features such as the Portuguese Sweet Chestnut Specimen tree, hidden folly and veteran trees where cuckoos can be heard. No wonder the Howard family (of Castle Howard fame) previously used this as a country residence.

Unfortunately our stay was spoilt by the lack of heating and hot water. We had major issues with the boiler which cut out completely on day two and when fixed lost pressure the next day. This meant that we were freezing cold on a morning and the same when returning back from our days out and we had no hot water which had an overall impact on using the hot tub to as we couldn't shower before or after this meant we only got to use it once. We did report these issues immediately and left a voicemail at the help number given. We managed to ask Leon for help who was maintaining the hot tub each morning he was really forthcoming to try and rectify the situation and on our return to the lodge he'd managed to rectify the situation temporarily. Despite Leon's best efforts who I must add was very apologetic and helpful the heating and water failed to start up even on our final day.

Gorgeous location, a lovely lodge, and the owners are super friendly. The hot tub was great, and a huge hit with the kids. The lodge is well decorated, light, spacious and modern insideMy only criticism would be that for a luxury accommodation, the beds are just glorified campbeds dressed up in nice bedding, with very soft and lumpy mattresses. It is also quite low on some essentials (e.g. coathangers, glasses, a clothes airer). In some ways it's very well equipped though (e.g. it even has a slow cooker)! Overall it's a lovely lodge, but I think perhaps the beds are past their prime, and some of the kitchen equipment needs replacing.
