We had such a wonderful stay at The Bull Pen in Compton! From the moment we arrived on Friday evening, we felt warmly welcomed—Mr Cooper popped by within a couple of hours to say hello, point us to the helpful info booklet, and share some fantastic dog-friendly walking routes. With two dogs in tow, we were thrilled to discover the field just behind the cottage leading into the woods and onto the South Downs—absolutely breath-taking views and perfect for a scenic stroll! The garden was a delightful surprise—spacious, beautifully kept, and fully enclosed, which made it ideal for relaxing outdoors. The gardener even came by to give the lawn a tidy-up, which was a lovely touch. Just a heads-up for those with reactive pups: the field does get a few passers-by, so visibility might be something to consider. We loved having the Village Shop Tea Room just a short 3-minute walk away. It offered a charming selection of teas, cakes, and even breakfast and lunch options, plus a few groceries. Prices were a bit premium, but the convenience and atmosphere made it worth it. That said, there aren’t many other shopping opportunities nearby, so it’s worth planning ahead or arranging a delivery like we did.To keep things stress-free, we arranged a Tesco delivery for Saturday—such a great decision! It meant we could dive straight into relaxation mode without the hassle of a supermarket run.Although the heating had a hiccup for a few days, the cottage stayed surprisingly warm and cosy. Mrs Cooper was quick to get it sorted and even came by to check everything was working before we left—such thoughtful hosts! The kitchen and bathrooms were spotless—honestly, the cleanest we’ve ever experienced on holiday. A few cobwebs up high added a touch of rustic charm and made the cottage feel even more homely. And the shower in the main ensuite? Absolutely divine—it genuinely elevated our whole holiday experience! We also ventured out to West Wittering beach a few times, just a 30-minute drive away. With it being outside school holidays, parking was a breeze and the beach was blissfully peaceful. We wholeheartedly recommend The Bull Pen—but maybe not too loudly, because we’re already planning our return!
