Guests say

1 River Cottage in Calstock is highly praised for its cleanliness, comfort, and prime location with beautiful river views. Guests appreciate the well-equipped facilities and the thoughtful touches, such as welcome treats. While some mention noise from nearby social venues, the overall experience is one of a welcoming and well-maintained holiday retreat.

Guests consistently commend the cottage for its cleanliness, describing it as 'very clean', 'well kept', and 'immaculate'. The attention to cleanliness contributes significantly to the positive experiences reported.

The location is celebrated for its stunning river views and proximity to local attractions. However, some guests note noise from nearby social venues, which slightly impacts the score. The convenience to pubs, walks, and public transport is a recurring positive aspect.

Comfort is frequently highlighted, with guests finding the beds and sofas comfortable and the house homely. A few comments about specific furniture being less comfortable and a small bed in the en-suite room are noted but do not detract significantly from the overall comfort.

Facilities are generally well-received, with the cottage being described as well-equipped and thoughtfully laid out. Some minor suggestions for improvements and issues with noise from a social club are mentioned, but these do not overshadow the overall positive feedback on the cottage's amenities.

Guests appreciate the thoughtful gestures, such as welcome treats and a well-stocked kitchen. While these gifts enhance the experience, it is noted that such offerings are subject to change and not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

1, River Cottage is a smart attached cottage on three levels with lovely, long, elevated views up and down river, conveniently situated in the hub of Calstock's village life. Just right for family holidays or a great spot for couples. From a central hall you step in to the cosy, comfy living room which has a wood-burning stove, opposite is the bright, modern kitchen/dining room with a door to the courtyard. At this level there is a utility room and WC. Head up the stairs to two bedrooms: a king-size zip-linked double and a single bedroom with doors to a roof terrace with table and chairs for al fresco meals. Family bathroom. More stairs up to the master double bedroom with en suite shower-room and doors to a little balcony with superb panoramic views just perfect for those sundowners. At the side is an enclosed courtyard with BBQ and at the front, a sunny little paved area with a bench looking over the green to the river. A picturesque and convenient spot for observing and enjoying village and river activity. Lovely walks from the

village with footpath to Cotehele House (National Trust), 1 mile. Fun canoeing expeditions. Once a thriving mining valley, now a World Heritage Site dominated by birdsong.

Calstock is a village in Cornwall, although it stands on the meandering River Tamar close to the Devon border and is dominated by the spectacular Calstock Viaduct, a giant 11-arched structure that still carries the railway line above the River Tamar along the picturesque branch line down to Plymouth. Calstock has been an important quay for centuries, transporting tin, copper and granite out of this important mining area downstream to Plymouth Docks. Today Calstock is a quiet village with a vibrant arts centre attracting musicians and artists from around Cornwall. A mile downstream brings you to Cotehele, a well-preserved medieval National Trust house with glorious gardens sweeping down to the River Tamar. Upstream from Calstock is Morwellham Quay, another important river port and now a living history tourist attraction where visitors can explore a copper mine by taking a train deep underground, admire the working Victorian farm or just quietly enjoy the beautiful Tamar Valley wildlife.

It has been renovated and decorated to a high standard and felt very nice to stay in. Everything had been thought through and organised to make it a really lovely place to stay. It was bigger than I was expecting and our family of 5 didn’t feel squashed or in each others way. We really enjoyed our weeks holiday and would highly recommend it - there is a lot to visit in the area - we had lots of walks on Dartmoor, visited Tavistock pannier market, Cothele house, Buckland Abby. The owners have pub a map on the wall, with recommendations for walks, activities and rainy day activities - this was really appreciated. I read some reviews about the pub noise - there was a band at the social club until 11pm on Saturday evening, but it didn’t disturb us, fortunately. The pub was closed, so I can’t comment. I took ear plugs, just in case, but they weren’t necessary. Overall, it was a really lovely cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed staying there. Thank you to the owners, who have obviously put a lot of work into making it a lovely place to stay.

Phoned again left message on Paula's mobile am Tuesday 24th December again no response. Whilst we were aware there was a pub beside the cottage we were not prepared for the outside noise late after the pub closed. There appeared to be some very aggressive conversations with a lot of loud swearing which woke up the two nine year olds who were frightened by this behaviour. Because of this we left a day early. Overall not impressed which was a shame as the cottage was very well equipped and spacious On my return home it would appear that Paula had phoned my home landline not much help!!

The only issue we had was with the grill that only worked on one side meaning we had to fry breakfast stuff. This was particularly challenging as there wasn't any veg oil or similar so we had to use the butter we bought. Add to that, there wasn't any washing up liquid only dishwasher tablets. Also, aside from hand wash there was no shower gel/shampoo/conditioner; I would normally expect some miniature toiletries and if this is not provided it would've been helpful to know as such so we could have planned accordingly.
