Fowey is situated in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has much to offer visitors. Susan’s House is situated at the top of the town, and a 15-minute walk in one direction takes you into the bustling shopping area, with a variety of outlets offering everything from fishing tackle to a gold necklace, or a simple pasty to a gourmet dinner. 15 minutes the other way leads to the pretty sandy cove of Readymoney, the South West Coast Path and the remains of St Catherine’s Tudor castle.
Cycling, golf, horse riding and walking can all be enjoyed locally, as can many of the historic country houses and castles such as Lanhydrock House and Restormel Castle, and the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are within a 30-minute drive.
Sightseeing boats provide the opportunity to see this coastline from a different perspective. Kayaking trips up the river to many of the small waterside villages with their quaint churches and lively pubs are also available. A ferry crosses the estuary at both ends of the town and can be used to complete the famous ’Hall Walk’ that hugs the estuary, meanders through wooded valleys, explores hidden creeks and provides amazing views from the cliffs.
Every May, The Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature brings a buzz to the town when artists, writers and musicians visit to entertain guests at various venues, with talks, concerts and hands-on activities. Another highlight of the calendar is the Fowey Royal Regatta which takes place during the third week of August. There is a full programme of sailing and many land-based activities including a carnival, fireworks, flora dance and live music on the Town Quay. Beach 1¼ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.
