Guests say

Elworthy Cottage in Salcombe, Devon, is praised for its excellent location, comfortable furnishings, and charming character. Guests appreciate the quiet setting and proximity to town, with some lovely touches in decoration. The garden and outdoor space are also highlights, though some guests suggest maintenance and cleanliness could be improved.

Several reviews mention issues with cleanliness, including cobwebs, dust, and a musty smell. Some guests found the property to be grubby and in need of a deep clean, which suggests room for improvement in this area.

The cottage's location is highly praised for being peaceful and quiet, yet within easy walking distance to Salcombe. Guests are pleased with the scenic surroundings and the convenience of the property's location.

Guests find the beds and linen comfortable, and the cottage cosy, especially the bedrooms. However, some guests mention issues with dampness and insufficient heating, which affects the overall comfort level.

The cottage is well-equipped with necessary appliances and a lovely garden. However, guests report maintenance issues such as broken dishwashers, heating problems, and overgrown gardens. These factors suggest that while the facilities are generally good, they require better upkeep.

While some guests suggest that additional thoughtful touches like fresh milk or kindling for the fire would be welcome, there is not enough consistent information across reviews to accurately score the thoughtfulness of the property management.

Considering the cost and it being a cute cottage it was in poor state of repair, dirty and unsatisfactory. For example, spiders and cobwebs all over, handrail up steps outside rotten, overgrown weeds and shrubs, kitchenware needed cleaning.

However it would now benefit from an overhaul. When we arrived we were surprised to see the property for sale. The land and gardens surrounding the property, whilst very pretty were very overgrown. Upon entering the property there was an overwhelming smell of damp which caused upset with my son who has Autism and sensory needs ( he went home after 2 days) The bed clothes in the twin room upstairs also felt clammy and needed to be aired outside. A lot of the windows had been painted shut so it was difficult to circulate fresh air in the property. The housekeeping also needed to be improved, the windows, window surrounds and window sills were dirty and would benefit from a good clean. The wet room diffuser reeds had gone mouldy in the oil and the floor needed a good scrub! Generally it felt a bit grubby, with multiple cobwebs in the corners of the rooms, on the bedstead bases and on the ceiling. I have some images I can share for further feedback. My daughter and I did enjoy our stay, the cottage charm and location were excellent and it was nice to be in Batson again as we frequently holiday in the area.

The double bed was very comfortable which I find a rare thing with self-catering properties. I wasn’t too impressed with the kitchen equipment. It would have been very useful to have some scales and oven gloves. Not everybody eats out so I found this a disadvantage. Unfortunately the microwave had not been cleaned and was badly stained with food. Also the roasting tin in the oven had not been washed after use by the previous occupant. I also noticed the powder compartment in the washing machine was very dirty which I cleaned out. Overall, it did not spoil my stay at the cottage with its lovely secluded garden and paddock and car parking area. It is a truly lovely spot with a lovely ambience and I would recommend it to anyone seeking peace and tranquility. Finally my thanks to Alice for arranging a new whirligig washing line for me!
