Guests say

Tuckermarsh Quay River Cottage 2 is a charming and peaceful retreat in Devon, praised for its serene location by the River Tamar and comfortable, clean accommodations. Guests enjoy the picturesque setting, wildlife, and local walks, though access via a narrow lane and bridge requires careful driving. The cottage's well-equipped kitchen, cosy beds, and friendly neighbours add to a delightful stay, with some noting the lack of broadband as an opportunity to disconnect and unwind.

The cottage generally receives high marks for cleanliness, with guests finding it tidy and well-maintained. A few isolated incidents of minor issues were mentioned, but these do not appear to be the norm.

The location is highly praised for its beauty and tranquillity, offering stunning river views and wildlife encounters. The remote setting is ideal for a quiet escape, though the challenging access road is noted.

Guests find the cottage comfortable, particularly highlighting the cosy beds and peaceful environment conducive to relaxation. Some discomfort with the living room sofa and a desire for a warmer welcome with pre-heated rooms were mentioned.

The facilities are generally appreciated, especially the well-equipped kitchen and the addition of a jetty. However, there are comments about maintenance issues such as hot water temperature, TV signal, and the need for minor repairs and updates.

While guests mention thoughtful touches like a welcome pack with biscuits and milk, there is insufficient information to determine if such gestures are consistent or guaranteed, thus a score cannot be provided.

About this property

Bere Alston 1.5 miles. Tuckermarsh Quay River Cottage 2 is one of a series of three river cottages built by miners and dating from the 1800s. It is idyllically set amongst old English woodlands and is nestled in the Devonshire banks of the River Tamar looking out into Cornwall. Situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just 1.5 miles from the Devon village of Bere Alston, this riverside cottage has plenty of character with a stone fireplace and a woodburning stove. The master bedroom at this Tuckermarsh cottage commands a magnificent view over the river and the surrounding countryside, whilst a single room commands the same view from a lower level.

A third single bedroom overlooks gardens and woodland. The outside area at this Bere Alston cottage is stunning, as it boasts a well-tended garden with a private wooden deck and a floating jetty, providing access into the river, especially for canoeing, at all tides. Take a leisurely canoe trip downstream (canoe not provided) under the great viaduct and on past Calstock, then stop at Cotehele, a well-preserved medieval manor house with gardens and quay. Alternatively, venture upriver to the beautifully restored ancient mining hamlet and quay of Morwellham, with its informative visitor attraction with rides deep into the mines. From this Bere Alston cottage, networks of public footpaths enable walkers and birdwatchers to experience a sense of peace in beautiful natural surroundings, whilst just a short stroll downstream is a seasonal ferry across the river into Calstock.

A superb holiday cottage on the ridge of the Bere Peninsula.

Bere Alston is a small Devon village between the rivers Tavy and Tamar. The village was once a port shipping tin from Dartmoor. Just upstream from Bere Alston on the river Tamar is Morwhellam Quay.

VIEWS AMAZING. NEEDED SATNAV TO FIND AS CAME A DIFFERENT ROUTE FROM OWNER'S DIRECTIONS. DRIVE DOWN LONG SINGLE TRACK ROAD TRICKY ON WET LEAVES BUT MANAGEABLE. LOVELY WALKS ALL AROUND. PERFECT ROMANTIC HIDEAWAY.

The facilities (kitchen, bathroom, etc.) are perfect (and had apparently been partially renovated). There are beautiful walking trails right outside the house and the surroundings are quiet and relaxing. The drive to the house is adventurous and only recommended for confident drivers. Our stay was also enriched by our neighbor Frank: very nice, funny, and good conversation!

This is one of the reasons I rated it so highly. The jetty onto the river was a definite plus point. However, being a tidal river the lower the water the tricker it is to get into the river. The tides were kind to us and we had plenty of padding in both directions. The cottage was very well equipped and the top bedroom had a fantastic view, super comfy bed and ensuite. (We didn't use the other bedrooms so can't comment on comfort, but both had nice views). The garden is lovely especially the decking area with seating by the river - worth carrying your breakfast down there each morning. Neighbours were very friendly. Parking is just a short walk away along the lane but you can easily drop off near the cottage. We had a Skoda Kodiaq which managed to get down to the property but we had to pull in our wing mirrors at some points. The location of the cottage is quite remote if you don't want to negotiate the very narrow road and private driveway (see description and reviews). However you can walk up through the woods on a marked footpath (about 20-25 mins) to the nearest village (with shop) or to the train station to travel (once every two hours) over to Calstock (pubs but no shop). Torch needed for the evening journey home. Remote location means super quiet and peaceful. Do look at the location on Google Maps to get an idea of where you are and what's nearby. If you take provisions with you then you don't actually need to worry about leaving the property by car until you go home. No WiFi but we had good coverage on O2 on our mobiles. All in all a lovely place to stay so long as you are aware of all the details given about location and access. Great value for money for such a gem of a place.
