This summary has been generated using feedback from guests who have stayed at this property

Benville Cottage is a well-loved property with a large garden and beautiful views, ideal for exploring Dorset. Guests appreciate its comfortable setting, though some noted areas for improvement. The property's charm and the attentive housekeeper are frequently mentioned, alongside the cosy fire and seasonal decorations.

Cleanliness

Mixed feedback on cleanliness, with several guests finding the cottage clean, while others reported issues such as mustiness, hairs, and unclean kitchenware. The property was spotless for some, but the inconsistency leads to a slightly above-average score.

Location

The location is highly praised for its beautiful views and central position for exploring Dorset. The garden and surrounding areas are appreciated, though one review mentioned a busy road. Overall, the location is considered excellent.

Comfort

Comfort is generally well-regarded, with the fire and AGA providing a cosy atmosphere. However, some guests found the beds and sofas uncomfortable, and the presence of spiders was a concern for one guest. The overall experience remains positive.

Facilities

Facilities received mixed reviews; guests enjoyed the well-equipped kitchen and homely feel, but noted outdated TVs, slow broadband, and a lack of 'catch up' TV services. Some appliances were also reported as antiquated or in need of replacement.

Thoughtfulness

Guests were touched by thoughtful touches such as a Christmas tree and a welcome hamper, contributing to a homely feel. However, as gifts are not guaranteed for every stay, this category cannot achieve the highest score.

About this property

This Historic Grade II Listed 17th Century detached cottage has a thatched roof and a wealth of period features. Benville is a small hamlet close to Evershot and an ideal base for touring West Dorset and Thomas Hardy country.

Benville Cottage, an historic Grade II Listed 17th Century detached property with a charming thatched roof and a wealth of period features, restored to a very high standard. Benville remains the small unspoilt hamlet that Thomas Hardy described in the 1800's. You will still find the pub described by Hardy and the cottage where Tess was to have stayed in nearby Evershot. The cottage itself is on Benville Lane, the very lane that Tess of the D'Urbeville walked along on her journey from Beaminster to Evershot.

The characterful sitting room features exposed beams and a unique stone wall carving of a King discovered during the cottage renovation, along with an inglenook fireplace with wood burning stove. A beautiful hand-made kitchen features an Aga, flagstone floors and a vaulted beamed ceiling. Outside, guests can enjoy ¾ of an acre of enclosed garden with views on to open countryside.

Comprising a dozen or so houses and cottages, the hamlet of Benville is an ideal base for touring West Dorset and Thomas Hardy country. Two miles to the east lies Evershot, with its award winning pub, The Acorn and an outstanding restaurant, The Summer Lodge. In nearby Beaminster, you'll find a traditional market town selling excellent local produce alongside tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. 10 miles to the south is the market town of Bridport and the fishing port of West Bay. This stretch of Jurassic - World Heritage - coastline boasts the stunning beaches of Burton Bradstock, Lyme Bay and Chesil Beach, as well as the Abbotsbury Swannery and Tropical Garden. The area is popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders and if you’ve had your fill of prehistoric sites, the county town of Dorchester is 10 miles to the South East where the Dorset County Museum has a good collection of locally found artefacts.

Additional Information:

Two small well-behaved dogs welcome (small additional charge).

Travel cot, highchair and stairgate available on request.

Whilst the garden is enclosed when the gate is closed, this is mainly by hedging, and cannot guaranteed as fully escape-proof for a determined dog.
