Guests say

Heyden Cottage in Somerset offers a tranquil and secluded retreat, surrounded by nature and wildlife. Guests appreciate the cosy atmosphere, the well-equipped kitchen, and the ample opportunities for walking and exploring the local area. The absence of TV and limited phone signal is seen as a benefit by many, enhancing the peaceful experience. The property's garden and woodland setting are particularly praised, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a relaxing and rustic getaway.

Guests consistently report that the cottage is clean and well-maintained, with only a few minor suggestions for improvement. The high standard of cleanliness contributes significantly to the overall positive experience.

The location is highly praised for its seclusion, natural beauty, and proximity to walking trails and local attractions. Some guests mention road noise, but this does not detract significantly from the overall appreciation of the setting.

The cottage is described as cosy, warm, and comfortable, with a welcoming atmosphere. Some guests suggest minor updates to furniture and mention a chilly upstairs bathroom, but overall, the comfort level is rated highly.

Facilities are generally good, with a well-stocked kitchen and generous log supply for the burner. However, there are comments about Wi-Fi issues, slippery courtyard, and maintenance needed for showers and fridge shelves, leading to a slightly lower score.

While guests express satisfaction with the overall experience, there is no specific mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the hosts. Therefore, this category cannot be scored.

About this property

On the edge of a large and beautiful wood, Heyden Cottage is a wonderful moorland Exmoor cottage found at the end of its own private uneven drive. With fabulous walks and mountain bike trails from the door and views across moorland from most windows it sits in a magical spot, great for stargazing. Inside there's a huge heart-of-the-house kitchen with dining table/chairs and a sofa plus wood burning stove to relax in front of after a hard day exploring the hills. There is also a cosy sitting room with an open fire (please note there is no TV at this property) and also a ground floor WC and shower room.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms, a double, twin and a single plus another bathroom with separate shower. Outside a suntrap courtyard with table/chairs and beyond the woodland and orchard to discover. From this unique base you can explore the very best of Exmoor; visit the hilltop castle of Dunster, take a trip to the idyllic National Trust village of Selworthy and explore the coastal village of Porlock. The resort town of Minehead is just 1 and a half miles away and is also worth a visit if you can drag yourself away from such a tranquil base.

Dunster is a popular tourist village near the North Somerset coast and is a largely unspoiled spot: the centre of the town retains many old buildings which hug the winding cobbled streets.

Why did I leave it so long before returning? Total relaxation and forgetting about everyday life for a week. The weather could have been better, but returning damp from a walk and lighting the wood burner was great. Two slight downsides - the bathroom light I found to be very dim, and the towels, although clean, appeared to be the same ones that were here when I visited 7+ years ago.

We felt that some of the furniture was rather 'tired' and could do with a bit of an update, especially in the sitting room. The situation of the cottage was amazing and exactly what we were looking for.

The kitchen area was a great gathering place, and we really appreciated the log fire ( on some cold June evenings) - also the occasional central heating. The bedrooms were comfortable - we felt that the bedding in the purple bedroom was rather tired and needed replacing - also the towels. We appreciated the 2nd shower. We enjoyed sitting in the sun in the passage way behind the cottage on the reclining chairs. but a picnic table / bench would have been good in a specific area. The walks in the woods were wonderful - especially walking to Dunster Castle!
