About this property

A cosy quintessentially English cottage in the heart of the historic Suffolk 'wool town' of Sudbury.

In the historic market town of Sudbury, standing proud with its' pale pink walls lies Friars Retreat. Dating back to the 1650's, Friars Retreat is a Grade II listed cottage; whose name may have been inspired by the former priory of Dominican friars founded in the 13th century who resided in Sudbury. This picture postcard retreat is complete with all the chocolate box features you would expect from a quintessentially English cottage; from exposed wooden beams to feature fireplaces and latticed windows - all topped off with all the modcon's you could possibly need for a stress free self catering holiday in Suffolk.

The cottage has been lovingly restored to provide a brand new kitchen, with breakfast table and modern bathroom with bath and double width shower cubicle. The ground floor living room with large Smart TV is welcoming and homely after a day's walking in the Suffolk countryside - complete with dining area, this room is perfect for 4; we recommend a good old fashioned game of cards round the table after dinner! Both bedrooms are warm and comfortable, with storage space for belongings you'll really want to make yourself at home quickly to enjoy the relaxation Friars Retreat can provide.

Ideal for: Small families, friends or couples looking to explore the Suffolk countryside from a comfortable base. Friars Retreat is just a short walk from the centre of the market town where all of the action happens, whilst the surrounding towns of Lavenham, Hadleigh and Constable Country are just a short distance by car.

Sleeps: 4 in 1 double and 1 twin. On street parking is available on Friars Street, Quay Lane and in a nearby car park.

Exploring: Sudbury is a small market town on the outskirts of Constable Country. With a selection of independent shops, cafe's and eateries, there is plenty of history packed within the fascinating streets. There is a rich variety of architecture, with many, like Friars Retreat, dating back to the 1600's. Sudbury is most well known for being one of the 'Wool Towns'. Between the 12th and 15th centuries wool had a very strong influence on European trade, causing a boom in production in the UK. The area of Sudbury played a key part in the weaving of wool and silk and the wealth that the income that this industry generated can be seen within the timber framed buildings and open and light churches that we see in place today. Particularly picturesque, these streets are often the subjects for photographers, artists and writers. Whilst in this beautiful area we also recommend you take a trip to nearby Lavenham at least once (13 minute drive) and Hadleigh (20 minute drive) to discover more about the fascinating history of this part of Suffolk.

Self Catering: You will find a handful of food shops within the heart of Sudbury itself including a Waitrose, McColls and an Iceland, however, most well known supermarkets will deliver to Friars Retreat.

Eating and Drinking out: There are plenty of eateries within Sudbury to keep you entertained, be it independent or chain. Or, if you fancy exploring, we recommend a cycle or car ride through the surrounding country lanes - it won't be long before you can find a quaint pub to dine in!

Beautifully and sympathetically restored property with every modern convenience. Pristine beds, linens and towels; immaculate kitchen and bathroom. Even the (complimentary) shower gel was colour co-ordinated! The attention to detail was most impressive.
