It’s time for a family holiday, so pack up and head to Orford. This charming town is surrounded by nature and would perfectly suit an outdoorsy group looking for a good time. You can visit the coast, go for a swim, take a boat out, walk around the reserve, or check out some great places to cycle, then return to a beautiful Grade-II listed property.
When you arrive, head to the kitchen/dining area for a soothing cup of tea. This area is great for rustling up – and devouring – feasts, and it’s equipped with an oak table with space for everyone. There’s underfloor heating, an excellent touch and ideal for warming the toes. Continue to the lounge, a lovely space with wooden finishes and a wood burner. It’s great for film nights, board games or curling up with a book. Soak your worries away in the bathroom, which has a wonderfully deep bath. There are two bedrooms on the first floor, a twin and a double with an ornamental fire. Both rooms are quiet and comfortable. Finally, check out the garden. There’s a shaded table for outdoor dining, and then a lawn and patio area. A summer house offers storage room for bikes.
Orford is built around a castle, and it’s well worth a trip. It’s 500 metres away from the cottage and you can learn all about the history and local legends. 500 metres in the opposite direction will take you to Orford Quay, where you can take boat trips along the waterways of a nearby RSPB site. Nearby town Aldeburgh (11 miles) is lovely, and it’s on the coast so make sure you pack your swimming costumes! There are plenty of spots to grab fish and chips or ice cream if you get peckish.
