Great Ayton was the boyhood home of the voyager Captain Cook, who navigated across thousands of miles of unmapped waters to become the first European to discover Australia, Hawaii and New Zealand.  There is also a pretty waterfall called Waterfall Park, and it is just a short walk to where you can watch cricket in the summer months.  There are two village greens, with High Green being close to Postman’s Lodge, and the second Low Green is towards the lower part of the village and is next to the River Leven, and is a picturesque area ideal for picnics. 

You can visit the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum nearby as well as the Captain Cook Memorial Garden or his monument perched high up on the moors.  There is a wonderful circular route from the monument to Roseberry Topping which is very popular with walkers due to its breath-taking views from its peak.  Just 10 minutes away is Guisbo. . .
