For the adventure fans, visit Mother Shipton's cave, dating back to 1630, hunt for treasure through Huntfun Harrogate, or get creative by making your own tipple at The Gin School. With centuries of history surrounding the Yorkshire Dales, get clued up by visiting the National Railway Museum York, take in the beauty and heritage of Newby Hall & Gardens, or time travel back to the Viking age at JORVIK Viking Centre. With so much to see, choose Foxy Cottage as your striking base in Ripley.

Sir William Amcotts Ingleby developed and erected the village of Ripley in Lower Nidderdale, on the leeward side of the Yorkshire Dales, in the 1830s. Sir William was so fascinated by a model estate village he saw in France that he returned home and dismantled the existing structures in Ripley, starting over with a traditional French style from the ground up. The community is small and pristine today, with a lovely Castle in the centre (which is still home to the Ingleby family) and huge gardens open to the public, including waterfalls, bridges, and a lake. Deer roam in the grounds, and the Castle has a shop and tea rooms. The village is centred on a wide cobbled market square, which is overseen by the Boar's Head, a historic coaching inn with an excellent restaurant, bar, and café. There is a village store and ice cream parlour, as well as a butcher's, an art gallery, and much more, where tourists may sample the famous Ripley ice cream.

Because of the excellent Sykes website and the photographs therein, the cottage lived up to the expectations. It is a beautiful, comfortable cottage in a pretty village. The cottage was reasonably well equipped with utensils, pans and cleaning materials etc, however we left some feedback on a couple of possible improvements. I found the beds comfortable and the rooms reasonably spacious with enough storage space for a week or so. The ‘Boot Room’ was useful but there was limited space for boots and shoes because it is in effect a storage cupboard for high chairs, irons, mops and hoover etc. On arrival the cottage was clean (initial impression) with a lovely welcome pack and cute hearts on the toilet roll for example. Every individual has differing standards of cleanliness and, as I said, initially the cottage appeared clean but throughout the week we discovered areas that could have been improved, cooker, oven and extractor hood, dusty skirting boards etc. This is a 5* cottage and for the most part I would agree, although 4.5* would be more accurate. Parking is not possible at the cottage. We were fortunate that the nearby parking at the end of the lane was available and we did not require the use of the large village car park. This is mentioned in the cottage details. That said, looking on the positives, we really did have a wonderful holiday in the cottage. I would definitely recommend it for a couple or small family. The location close to tourist attractions and 3 towns with facilities is another bonus.

Lovely cosy property in a beautiful village. No private garden, but a sitting out area in the courtyard backing on to the cottages. We would stay again. Generous welcome pack.

Only one saucepan makes catering a challenge - providing another would make a weeks stay perfect!
