For a livelier market town, head south to Pateley Bridge in the centre of Nidderdale with an idyllic high street, where you can discover local history at the Nidderdale Museum, dine at the lovely riverside tea room, or visit The Oldest Sweet Shop in the World, built in 1616. The fascinating remains of the medieval Fountains Abbey are a short journey east and well-worth a visit, surrounded by 18th-century gardens to explore and stunning scenic views. Journey south west to Grassington for a perfect base before heading off into the Yorkshire Dales, with a cobbled market square for shops and eateries, the picturesque Linton Falls along the River Wharfe, and the fascinating Folk Museum full of local culture.
