The small courtyard was particularly welcome in the September sunshine. Middleham offers a perfect base for exploring the surrounding area with many great walks from the door. The nearby horse racing gallops provide a spectacular backdrop to many of the walks particularly during the morning training sessions. The only minor negative was the traffic noise in the evening from the speeding Tractors and Range Rovers, a common problem in Yorkshire as it appears the 30 mph limit does not apply to those drivers.

Negatives: there was dog poo tied up and left in the yard, along with a whole shed full of (I assume) the previous occupier’s rubbish. There was a glass found under the bed. When picking up puzzle pieces from the rug in the living room, they were covered in hairs (dog and human) leaving us to wonder whether only a very basic clean was done prior to our arrival. There was a few days of parking wars with the neighbour who was leaving passive aggressive notes about moving her planters. These were positioned in an awkward way so we could only just reverse our estate car in. After moving one mere centimetres to be inline with her house, we returned to a note demanding that we DO NOT move her planters. It made getting in the house difficult and as a family on holiday, we are bound to have luggage, shopping and children in tow, meaning parking in the town wasn’t a practical option. On the whole though, it was a good base to return to and had all the equipment we needed for a week’s stay. This is our second visit to Middleham and we will be back, although wouldn’t stay here again just based on the housekeeping and parking.
