Cleanliness received mixed reviews. Some guests found the cottage clean but not spotless, with specific mentions of cobwebs and dust. However, others were satisfied with the level of cleanliness. The varied feedback suggests room for improvement.

The location is highly praised for its stunning scenery and peacefulness, with easy access to walking trails and the countryside. The remote setting is appreciated by those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

Comfort is generally well-regarded, with guests finding the bed comfy and the cottage cosy. However, some guests noted issues with the duvet size and thickness, as well as the initial cool temperature due to the storage heater settings.

About this property

Heugh Barn occupies an envious position in the heart of the Swaledale village of Thwaite. The property has been thoughtfully converted to provide splendid accommodation amidst the breath-taking Yorkshire Dales National Park. This welcoming property is surrounded by luscious walking and cycling country, and offers comfortable accommodation for two people. The property benefits from reverse-level accommodation, with the ground floor playing host to a tasteful double bedroom along with an immaculate shower room. Both boast a refreshing neutral theme with original features and touches being retained providing a reminder as to the history of the building. The first floor of Heugh Barn, the former hayloft, is occupied by a beautiful open-plan living area with a vaulted ceiling, featuring original beams, providing a real sense of space.

The room is dominated by a stunning exposed stone wall, which is further enhanced by an alluring wood-burner. The window provides views over the rooftops of the village towards Kisdon Hill. This homely room has a leather sofa providing cosy seating where guests can snuggle up in front of the TV and wood-burning stove. There is also a romantic dining area and bespoke kitchen. The traditional style units provide ample storage and work-surfaces. Astoundingly beautiful walking and cycling paths are available from your doorstep, leading you through the magnificent countryside of the Dales. Thwaite is located at the foot of Buttertubs Pass between the villages of Muker and Keld.

Thwaite Village amenities a mere two minute walk from Heugh Barn include a tearoom, bar and restaurant located in the Kearton Hotel. All of these are open to non-residents (booking required for restaurant). The Pennine Way passes through the village, the recently completed Swale Trail cycle path and enchanting waterfalls can be found in nearby Keld. The picturesque village of Muker is a sedate one mile stroll and boasts a handy pub, shop and tea rooms. Slightly further afield are the lead-mines of Gunnerside, the famous Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes, Castle Bolton and the world famous Tan Hill pub, the highest in England.

Heugh Barn is a truly amazing countryside retreat.

Muker is a village in the Yorkshire Dales, it boasts walking opportunities, a shop and a pub as well as an art gallery, craft shop and a café. The Dales is bursting with scenery and things to see and do, while the fascinating market town of Richmond is worth the 25-mile drive.

Parking was easy just outside the door, hooks for coats and a boot tray so you didn't trail mud in. Perfect cottage to relax in with a comfy sofa, and a good kitchen & dining area. Ideally positioned with roads and paths to Keld, Muker, Gunnerside, and up Buttertubs pass to Hawes. We've loved staying here and will definitely be coming back. The owners have a little gem on their hands, and we'd recommend it highly. Jeremy & Jackie from Halifax.

Would have preferred to have access at 4pm and leave at 10am like most properties

The storage heaters mean that there is no heat for the first night apart from an oil filled radiator which would need to be moved down to the bedroom if needed. The position of the bed means shuffling either side to get in. A lot of the surfaces were sticky. It was really difficult to get the windows open and a lot of strength needed. The kitchen utensils and units were old or in need of repair/replacement. The dining table was too small. The biggest issue was the night storage heaters that offer poor control over hating. This all sounds that I'm nit picking but in reality I was just disappointed.
