Guests say

Waterloo Cottage Annexe receives glowing praise for its beautiful riverside location, abundant wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere. Guests consistently highlight the cottage’s cleanliness, comfort, and well-equipped kitchen, with many returning year after year. The property is ideal for relaxing or exploring Whitby and the surrounding countryside. While some mention minor issues such as the lack of a welcome pack, occasional maintenance niggles, and heating controls, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests appreciating thoughtful touches and the friendly owners.

Cleanliness is frequently praised, with multiple guests describing the cottage as spotless, immaculate, and very well maintained. Only one or two minor comments were made about worn cooker knobs, but these did not detract from the overall impression.

The riverside setting is a standout feature, with guests loving the views, wildlife, and proximity to Whitby. The peaceful environment and easy access to local walks, the railway, and village amenities are repeatedly highlighted.

Guests find the cottage extremely comfortable, mentioning warm heating, cosy furnishings, and a restful atmosphere. A few noted the bed is a standard double rather than king size, but this was a minor point for most.

The cottage is described as well-equipped, with a good kitchen, powerful shower, and useful extras like a washing machine and books. Some minor issues were noted, such as TV volume, heating controls, and a worn can opener, but these did not significantly impact enjoyment.

Several guests appreciated welcome packs, wine, biscuits, and helpful information, though a few noted these are not always provided. Please note that such gifts are not guaranteed. The owners are described as friendly and responsive.

About this property

An attractive, single-storey property, adjoining the owners' holiday home, situated on the banks of the River Esk in Ruswarp village. Traditionally furnished and decorated, this Ruswarp cottage provides desirable accommodation for couples wishing to stay in a tranquil riverside setting, but within easy reach of the lively seaside town of Whitby. The spacious sitting room takes in lovely views over the river and offers a cosy woodburner for cooler evenings, whilst the small kitchen opens onto a porch/conservatory with additional seating overlooking the garden. Outside this Ruswarp cottage, a lawned garden runs alongside the river banks, a delightful place to sit, relax and watch the abundance of wildlife - including seals that are regularly seen swimming upstream.

This Ruswarp cottage has the added benefit of river access, so guests are able to bring canoes and kayaks. Ruswarp village has excellent facilities, including a renowned butcher's, a local inn serving real ales and food and a village shop. Steam trains regularly pass by in the summer months and a public footpath offers a pleasant walk into Whitby, with its famous abbey, good beaches and historic harbour. Why not climb the 199 steps up to St. Mary's church and take an invigorating cliff top walk, or explore the quaint, narrow streets and cobbled market place? With the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors close by and the dramatic coastline to discover, this Ruswarp cottage provides an ideal base.

Just two miles inland from the seaside resort of Whitby and the Yorkshire Coast is the quiet little North York Moors village of Ruswarp. As well as a nine-hole golf course, this quaint little place also enjoys the use of a village pub and shop as well as both sea and river fishing facilities. The river which runs through town provides excellent opportunities for a boat ride, or just a few minutes away is the local miniature steam railway. With so much to do in the area, this is an excellent base for those looking to enjoy the Yorkshire Coast.

As I took ill we had to use the bed settee and it was out saviour. With it being firm it eased the pain. We were very sad to leave. Having meals in the conservatory looking at the beautiful view of the river and garden made our holiday. Booked for next year

It is ideal to explore from and the cottage has everything you need. Plenty of crockery and culterly. The garden is a lovely place to sit and relax whilst being greeted by ducks and watching the alpaca and cattle in the fields over the river

Very nicely presented with clean, comfortable furnishings and a well equipped kitchen. The garden is very pretty with ample furniture for sitting and eating out next to the river (watch out for the mozzies!) Very short drive into Whitby for the NYMR, the Abbey and a slow stroll through the old town to the harbour. Lots of pretty independent cafés and coffee shops to frequent, along with jewellers for the famous Whitby jet and of course you cannot visit without trying the delicious fish and chips! Though we bring our own, we have always been greeted at other accommodation with the basics like tea, coffee, sugar and a pint of milk, there's none of that here (but there's a well put together list of local amenities including nearby supermarkets if you need to do a shop), but, all in all, we have to say that Waterloo Cottage Annex is one of the most delightfully situated places we have ever stayed, it's a credit to the owner and to Sykes. Absolutely recommend it.
