Guests say

Captain's House in Whitby is a spacious, well-equipped cottage praised for its excellent location within walking distance of the town centre and river. Guests consistently highlight its cleanliness, comfort, and suitability for families and dogs. The property offers ample space, a secure garden, and thoughtful touches such as board games and a well-stocked kitchen. While a few minor issues were noted, such as occasional dust, creaky doors, and personal preferences regarding bedding, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests eager to return.

Most guests found the property spotlessly clean and well-maintained, with only a couple of minor mentions of dust and a hoover needing emptying. Bedding and towels were generally clean, though one guest noted a slight odour, possibly from washing powder.

The location is highly praised for being quiet yet within easy walking distance of Whitby’s attractions and the river. A few guests mentioned it may be a little far for those with limited mobility, but overall, the setting is considered ideal.

Guests describe the house as comfortable, spacious, and homely, with good beds and living areas. Some minor feedback included flat pillows and a mattress not suiting one guest’s preference, but these did not detract from the overall comfort.

The cottage is very well equipped, especially the kitchen, and offers multiple bathrooms, a secure garden, parking, and family-friendly features like stair gates. Small suggestions included more garden chairs and minor maintenance such as creaky doors and water pressure.

Several guests appreciated thoughtful touches such as a welcome pack, board games, and a BBQ, though one guest noted the welcome pack was missing. Please note that gifts or welcome packs are not guaranteed for every stay.

Captain’s House is a modern town house in a fantastic location, situated just a short walk away from the bustling heart of Whitby on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast. It has four bedrooms, two of which are en-suite, and an open plan kitchen/dining area, which has views of the river and steam railway, and makes for a great social hub! There is also a separate living room with leather corner sofa with reclining seats - perfect to relax in after an exciting day out. Outside is a good-sized garden, a suntrap in good weather, and which has views of the river and railway and you can see the steam train leave Whitby Station. This location is a haven for walkers and cyclists, and many walks can be accessed from the doorstep, including a riverside walk along the Esk or along the disused railway line between Whitby and Scarborough, known as the Cinder Track, and which calls at picturesque Robin Hood’s Bay. There is even an enclosed playground for the kids in front of the house.

Famous for its links to Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’ novel, Whitby has a Gothic flavour with its abbey atop the famous 199 steps offering exhilarating views every way you turn from this natural vantage point, across the harbour and town, and into the countryside beyond. The ruins of the abbey stand proudly on top of the East Cliff headland above the busy seaside town of Whitby. The old town has cobbled streets and independent shops galore, as well as a fantastic foodie scene with everything from award-winning fish and chips to gastro pubs, bistros and traditional pub fayre. There are plenty of tea rooms and coffee shops mixed amongst the ice cream parlours and pubs with live music all year round. Whitby plays host to many different festivals and events from the bi-annual Goth weekends, a 60s music festival, a regatta and popular Folk Festival, so keep an eye on the calendar of events. There is a 2 mile stretch of golden sand to explore with rock pools and fossil hunting, or take a boat trip out to sea for a different view of this striking coastline.

Venture further afield and visit the North York Moors National Park for some stunning scenery. Take a steam train journey into the heart of the National Park from Whitby station and snake into lush greenery. You can also visit ‘Aidensfield’ from the TV series ’Heartbeat’ at Goathland. Explore the Yorkshire Heritage Coast and discover the many hidden gems, such as Runswick Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes which are all a short drive away. The traditional seaside town of Scarborough is 20 miles to the south and has plenty to offer, with its expanse of beaches, a waterpark and an open-air theatre which has regular international bands and acts performing throughout the summer. There is so much more in the area, including the walled city of York, Pickering and an abundance of historic abbeys across North Yorkshire. For family fun, visit Flamingo Land theme park or take a day trip across to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Beach ½ mile. Shop 250 yards, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

Lovely home, great location. Better equipped than any holiday home we've stayed in before. Parking for 2 cars, lovely enclosed garden., perfect for our 2 dogs, who loved the beach nearby. Plently of clean towels. Board games available, all the utensils you could need. Great little welcome pack. A bbq in the garden which wasn't in the listing but was a welcome find. A couple of all niggles we had.... struggled with the tv to get just regular channels rather than streaming services. The doors upstairs could do with a little wd40 they were quite creaky, water pressure wasn't great in the shower. Mattress in master bedroom wasn't to my liking but thats probably down to personal preference as i have inflammatory arthritis. These didn't take away from our stay and we would happily return. Thank you for a lovely break.

Nice location bit far from centre if you can’t walk very far. Bedding towels was clean but had a wired smell. (Maybe washing powder). Everything thing else was good.
