The Captain's House in Whitby is a well-furnished, comfortable holiday rental that is highly appreciated by guests for its excellent location and amenities. It is particularly noted for being pet-friendly and suitable for families, with a well-equipped kitchen and enclosed garden. The property is within walking distance to the town centre and offers a quiet, homely atmosphere, making it a favourite for many repeat visitors.
Most guests found the Captain's House to be very clean and comfortable. However, one review mentioned dust and a full hoover, indicating a slight oversight in cleanliness on that occasion.
The location is consistently praised for being close to Whitby's centre, quiet, and offering a pleasant riverside walk. It is deemed perfect for accessing local amenities and attractions.
Guests describe the Captain's House as a 'home from home', with comfortable furnishings and a layout that accommodates both adults and children, including the provision of child gates.
The property is well-equipped, especially the kitchen, and is suitable for families and pets. However, one review mentioned a radiator issue and the desire for an additional TV, suggesting room for improvement in facilities and maintenance.
While the reviews reflect a positive experience, there is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness. Therefore, it is not possible to provide a score in this category.

Captain’s House is a modern town house in a fantastic location, situated just a short walk away from the bustling heart of Whitby on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast. It has four bedrooms, two of which are en-suite, and an open plan kitchen/dining area, which has views of the river and steam railway, and makes for a great social hub! There is also a separate living room with leather corner sofa with reclining seats - perfect to relax in after an exciting day out. Outside is a good-sized garden, a suntrap in good weather, and which has views of the river and railway and you can see the steam train leave Whitby Station. This location is a haven for walkers and cyclists, and many walks can be accessed from the doorstep, including a riverside walk along the Esk or along the disused railway line between Whitby and Scarborough, known as the Cinder Track, and which calls at picturesque Robin Hood’s Bay. There is even an enclosed playground for the kids in front of the house.
Famous for its links to Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’ novel, Whitby has a Gothic flavour with its abbey atop the famous 199 steps offering exhilarating views every way you turn from this natural vantage point, across the harbour and town, and into the countryside beyond. The ruins of the abbey stand proudly on top of the East Cliff headland above the busy seaside town of Whitby. The old town has cobbled streets and independent shops galore, as well as a fantastic foodie scene with everything from award-winning fish and chips to gastro pubs, bistros and traditional pub fayre. There are plenty of tea rooms and coffee shops mixed amongst the ice cream parlours and pubs with live music all year round. Whitby plays host to many different festivals and events from the bi-annual Goth weekends, a 60s music festival, a regatta and popular Folk Festival, so keep an eye on the calendar of events. There is a 2 mile stretch of golden sand to explore with rock pools and fossil hunting, or take a boat trip out to sea for a different view of this striking coastline.
Venture further afield and visit the North York Moors National Park for some stunning scenery. Take a steam train journey into the heart of the National Park from Whitby station and snake into lush greenery. You can also visit ‘Aidensfield’ from the TV series ’Heartbeat’ at Goathland. Explore the Yorkshire Heritage Coast and discover the many hidden gems, such as Runswick Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes which are all a short drive away. The traditional seaside town of Scarborough is 20 miles to the south and has plenty to offer, with its expanse of beaches, a waterpark and an open-air theatre which has regular international bands and acts performing throughout the summer. There is so much more in the area, including the walled city of York, Pickering and an abundance of historic abbeys across North Yorkshire. For family fun, visit Flamingo Land theme park or take a day trip across to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Beach ½ mile. Shop 250 yards, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

Excellent accommodation. Well situated for all Whitby’s amenities. Have returned several times to the Captain's House, our favourite ‘home from home’.Well furnished with everything you need. Perfectly suited for the six of us with family bathroom plus two en-suites, although it comfortably sleeps eight. Looking forward to our next visit!
