This Grade II Listed mid-terrace old fisherman's cottage, said to date before 1401, is located in the ancient village of Whitby. Formerly known as Smugglers Yard the modern name comes from the lugger or logger figurehead attached to the wall of the old Smugglers Café, said to have originally been taken from a captured French Vessel. Supposedly the residence of one or more doctors at one time, the houses along the western side of the yard conceal a tunnel leading from the former Cutty Sark public house to the Smugglers Café. The tunnel allegedly carried on along Baxtergate and emerged under the font in the old Unitarian chapel in Flowergate. Though the Baxtergate part of the tunnel was believed to be legendary, remains were found behind Boots the Chemist when building work was taking place in recent years. Step inside where you will find an open plan sitting area with a sofa,fire, and stone features. A dining table rests nearby, which adds to the warm and snug layout, ideal for resting in the evening. The kitchenette is tucked into the corner, wrapped in colourful tiles, and comes complete with the essentials you need to feel right at home. A winding stairway will take you up to the first floor where you will be welcomed by a double bedroom hosting a feature fireplace, overseen by ceiling beams which rest above.
