Guests say

Drake Lodge receives high praise for its spotless cleanliness, peaceful setting, and well-equipped, cosy interiors. Guests consistently mention the tranquil atmosphere and thoughtful touches, making it ideal for a relaxing break. The location is perfect for exploring Staithes and the surrounding coastline, though the steep hill to the site is noted as a challenge for some. Minor maintenance issues are occasionally mentioned, but do not detract from the overall positive experience. The property is especially appreciated by dog owners and those seeking a quiet retreat.

Cleanliness is a standout feature, with nearly every review describing the lodge as spotless, immaculate, or very clean. Guests repeatedly commend the high standards of hygiene and the efforts of the cleaning team.

The location is highly regarded for its peacefulness and proximity to Staithes and local attractions. The only recurring drawback is the steep hill leading to the site, which some guests found challenging, especially those with mobility issues.

Guests find the lodge comfortable, with particular praise for the beds and overall cosiness. A few mention less comfortable lounge furniture, but this is outweighed by positive comments about restful stays and good sleep quality.

The lodge is described as well-equipped, with everything needed for a holiday. Minor maintenance issues such as a loose toilet seat, broken blinds, and occasional site upkeep are mentioned, but most guests found all amenities in good working order.

Several guests appreciated thoughtful touches such as snacks on arrival and festive decorations. While these gestures are warmly received, it should be noted that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.

The charming seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets, is considered something of an artist’s dream, and even has its own popular Art and Heritage Festival along with regular workshops and artisan displays. The pretty houses dotted around the old harbour are surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, and a sheltered sandy beach is set amongst the rocky coastline. Steeped in history, Captain Cook served his apprenticeship in Staithes, and there are many old buildings to admire and a museum to take you back in time.

Modern day Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to a rnli lifeboat station, and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) land their catch of fish, crab and lobster. There are also boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and whale watching available, and an ’Illusion Trail’ guides visitors around the network of backstreets and alleyways. The Cleveland Way stretches its way along this dramatic coastline and is a firm favourite with walkers as it drops into many hidden bays and coves such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

Whitby is just 10 miles away and is one of Yorkshire’s most picturesque coastal fishing towns, with a bustling harbour, narrow cobbled streets, old fishermen’s cottages and historic abbey. The town hosts regular events and festivals including the Gothic Weekend, a regatta and regular live music events to complement its many fabulous restaurants, bars and cosy tea rooms.

Head inland to enjoy a myriad of walking and cycling routes that the National Park has to offer, enjoy a warm welcome in one of the many village inns, or take a steam train journey into the heart of the park. Surf enthusiasts will enjoy Saltburn-by-the-Sea with its numerous surf schools and there are plenty of courses for the golfers. Beach ½ mile. Shop 350 yards, pub and restaurant 700 yards.

Excellent 5 days, couldn't find fault with the accommodation or location, although the access road is not for the faint hearted.
