The Hayloft is a charming and cosy cottage in the peaceful village of Lastingham, ideal for couples seeking a relaxing getaway. Guests consistently praise its beautiful location, proximity to scenic walks and an excellent local pub, as well as the warm and welcoming host. The property is well-equipped and clean, with secure parking and a private garden by a stream. While some mention minor issues with the mattress, shower, and kitchen appliances, the overall experience is highly positive, with many guests eager to return.
Cleanliness is frequently highlighted, with guests describing the property as very clean, tidy, and well-presented. Only a few minor comments mention worn cushions or blinds, but these are outweighed by the many positive remarks.
The location receives outstanding feedback, with guests loving the tranquil village setting, beautiful countryside, and easy access to the moors, coast, and York. The proximity to a highly rated pub is also a recurring highlight.
Most guests find the cottage cosy and comfortable, especially for two people. Some mention a very comfortable bed, while a few note a preference for a firmer mattress or found the shower over the bath awkward. Overall, comfort is rated highly.
Facilities are generally well-received, with secure parking, a private garden, and a well-equipped kitchen. Some guests found the combination oven/microwave and the shower setup less convenient, and a few noted minor maintenance issues such as worn blinds.
The host is repeatedly described as friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Some guests mention thoughtful touches such as a bottle of wine on arrival, but please note that such gifts are not guaranteed for every stay.
A charming 18th century, stone-built detached barn conversion, originally a hayloft, situated in the pretty village of Lastingham. Stone steps lead up to the entrance of the cottage, which is all on one level. This lovingly restored hayloft is stylishly furnished and decorated with a contemporary open-plan living area, yet remains cosy and inviting. The owners live in the adjoining property and personally welcome guests. With excellent walking from the doorstep, numerous villages and market towns to explore within the beautiful North York Moors National Park, and easy access to the East Coast, this makes an ideal base for an enjoyable, relaxing holiday.
Situated on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, the small village of Lastingham has a unique and fascinating history. A monastery was founded in 654 by St Cedd and flourished until the Danes destroyed it in the 9th century. In 1078, Stephen, the Abbot of Whitby, persuaded William I to restore Lastingham. However, Stephen and his monks left abruptly to set up a new monastery in York, leaving only the crypt and the apse of the church complete. Amazingly, the crypt has survived unaltered over the centuries. Local attractions include the North Yorkshire Moors, Pickering Castle, the Wheeldale Roman Road and the Rievaulx Terrace and Temples. For lovers of the Great Outdoors, there are plenty of beautiful and scenic walks leading directly from the village.

Kitchen area is small, but should be OK for two. Generous outdoor area, right next to the beck. Friendly owners, and Lastingham is a lovely little hamlet.

Bed was comfortable and slept well. Great Pub just around the corner. Ample safe parking for my car. Alan, the owner, very helpful and lived next door. Would return if ever I wanted to visit Yorkshire again.
