Guests say

Burnside Cottage offers a cosy and well-equipped base in a quiet location, ideal for exploring Islay and its attractions. Guests appreciated the comfortable beds, reliable WiFi, and proximity to local amenities such as the Bruichladdich Distillery and scenic walks. The cottage is praised for its spacious bedrooms, large garden, and countryside views. While some guests noted areas needing improvement, such as exterior maintenance and the unfinished porch, most found the property clean and functional, making it a good choice for couples, families, and dog owners seeking a relaxing stay on Islay.

Several guests found the cottage clean and tidy, with particular mention of new carpets and a well-kept interior. However, some reviews highlighted issues such as soiled bedding and wet floors on arrival, indicating inconsistency in cleaning standards.

The location is highly praised for its convenience, being close to Bruichladdich Distillery, Port Charlotte, and offering easy access to the rest of Islay. Guests enjoyed the quiet cul-de-sac setting and countryside views.

Guests found the beds very comfortable and the cottage warm, with spacious bedrooms and a relaxing bath. Some noted the lounge was small for four people and the bathroom layout could be awkward for taller guests.

The cottage is generally well-equipped, with a good kitchen, large TV, and reliable WiFi. Some guests mentioned a lack of certain kitchen items, unfinished areas, and maintenance issues such as cracked paving and an unfinished porch.

A welcome pack was mentioned in the cottage folder but was not consistently provided, with only basic tea and coffee sachets available for some guests. Please note that gifts or welcome packs are not guaranteed.

Bruichladdich is a distillery village, situated on the peninsula known as the Rhinns of Islay on the shores of beautiful Loch Indaal and is an excellent base for visiting the wonderful and unique Isle of Islay. As well as the distillery, there is a handy mini-market where you can buy daily groceries. Just 2 miles down the road, is the bigger village of Port Charlotte, with its charming white stone cottages, hotel, restaurant, café, village shop with post office, as well as a museum and wildlife visitor centre. There’s also a restaurant, bar and children’s playground at Port Mor, just outside the village. A recent addition for walkers is The Loch Indaal Way, a coastal walk connecting the two villages of Bruicladdich and Port Charlotte, ideal for any ability.

Bruichladdich is about 20 minutes’ drive from the two ferry ports of Port Ellen and Port Askaig (advance booking advisable) and just 10 minutes from the main town of Bowmore, which has a charming small village character, with plenty of amenities and a good variety of shops, hotels and restaurants, banks, post office and swimming pool with fitness centre. There are many small villages within a short driving distance, with Port Ellen being the principal fishing port and ferry terminal on the island with shopping facilities, hotels, restaurants, post office and pontoons available for yachts.

The world famous, challenging golf links at Machrie are about 15 miles away nestled alongside 7 miles of pristine beach. At the ferry port of Port Askaig, you can catch a ferry to the Isle of Jura which also has a world class reputation for whisky and beautiful scenery. Islay is known as ‘The Queen of the Hebrides’, and can be easily accessed by ferry from Kennacraig in Kintyre or from Oban. The island is quite large and is a paradise for birdwatchers, ramblers, fishermen, golfers, artists, lovers of fine food and, of course, there are nine (and counting!) whisky distilleries to visit and savour. Burnside Cottage is a semi detached property in a quiet cul-de-sac next to rural farmland. It is a short minute or two walk to Bruichladdich Distillery and the pier looking out on to Lochindaal. A beautiful mile and a half walk to Port Charlotte and its amenities. The house itself we found to be clean, functional and well equipped with everything we needed. Bathroom large and spacious with a bath and shower. Fantastic TV if bad weather and you fancy a quiet night in. Good sized galley style kitchen. Two spacious bedrooms with functional furniture and fittings. This house would make a reasonably priced launch pad for a family or group looking to explore the whisky, wildlife or just plain old beauty that Islay has to offer. Found our minimal interaction with the owner to be friendly, informative and helpful. More than met our expectations.

Totally agree with other less favourable reviews. Don’t go! No way 4 star . Description is creative! Exterior not cared for 2O22 extension / porch still not finished. Lots of concerns , but soiled mattress covers / beds / pillows the icing on the cake!!Love Islay but stay elsewhere

Burnside is a cozy, well equipped and nicely situated cottage on a lovely part of Islay. Close to Port Charlotte which has 3 decent restaurants and 2 good bars, and play traditional music regularly. The photos of the cottage give a true representative of the interior. A nice place to stay offering good value for money and a good location to tour Islay.
