The latter is a self-confessed artists' town with a historic connection to the Glasgow Boys, along with plenty of local art galleries to explore. The former sits on the edge of Galloway Forest Park (13 miles), a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site and a destination for endless hikes, bike rides and nature trails.
