Curlew lodge is one of three set on Arbigland Estate and only 20 yards from the super beach on the edge of the Nith Estuary; the estuary is home to 10's of thousands of wintering geese which are faciating to see, if you want to wake up to the sound of waves and seabirds and watch kestrels hover above cattle grazing in green meadows from your windows then this is the place for you.
Arbigland Estate is the ideal base for mountain biking, birdwatching, golf or collapsing and revelling in the amazing surroundings. The South Carse equestrian centre is close by so you can bring your horse with you and keep him in the livery yard tto allow you both to enjoy riding on the beach and around the bridleways on the estate.
The marvellous wildlife and birdwatching at the RSPB Mersehead Reserve just a few miles along the coast should not be missed. The reserve is particularly spectacular in winter with thousands of geese and other over wintering wildfowl present but in summer is also worth a visit with pleasant walks through the reserve woodlands down to the beach. During the winter the reserve also runs Badger Watching and other events.
Cycling and walking are particularly well catered for with numerous coastal walks and also Forestry Commission Woodlands including the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Routes which have been laid out in a number of the Forestry Commission properties across the region. The closest of these are at Dalbeattie and Mabie Woods both of which provide superb and spectacular settings for quiet walks or testing strenuous mountain biking routes. The famous Southerness Links golf course is close by, together with other less testing courses in the local area.
If you are looking to explore Scotland's culture and heritage you are spolit for choice with numerous historic sites to explore including Sweetheart Abbey in New Abbey together with one of the oldest Corn Mills, also maintained by Historic Scotland. Connections with Burns can be explored in Dumfries and other villages including Ellisland Farm at Holywood where Burns farmed for a number of years.
