A short stroll brings you to the centre of Kirkcudbright, known as the Artists Town, as it has attracted many well-known artists over the years. Wander around the harbour or visit McLellans Castle or Broughton House. Have a day at the beach at nearby Dhoon or take advantage of the superb walking and cycling that this lovely part of Scotland has to offer. The historic town of Kirkcudbright is situated on the banks of the River Dee, on the north Solway shore. The town has a working harbour, wide streets, pastel coloured houses, a mix of Georgian villas and Victorian townhouses, as well as the ruins of McLellan's Castle. Kirkcudbright also has a collection of art galleries, crafts, cafés and antique shops.

Unfortunately the overall impression we got was that it was all a little tired - wonky drawer in one of the bedrooms, kitchen units were a bit weary, lovely looking shower but the water pressure was really disappointing. Just a bit more effort on cleaning and maintenance and this would have been a five star gem.

Kirkcudbright is wonderful and worth a visit, but we won't return to this cottage. Back door in need of redecoration, it is tatty inside. Air circulation in property poor as there are no trickle valves on the double glazing. Security poor - a simple yale-type lock on a front door in inadequate, and the back gate was impossible to bolt - even though the notes said that the back gate would be locked. Over a dozen instructions dotted around the house, plus a folder and a noticeboard! Most properties manage with just a folder. Back 'garden' and 'courtyard' were disappointing - vertical garden unsafe/impossible to use. The 'courtyard' was no more than a place to store bins and some strange storage box. Owner's attitude seemed sanctimonious and misogynistic when we asked if the Sky pin could be removed - why inflict a pin-protected watershed on adult customers? No customer should be called 'pushy' - maybe Sykes could provide this owner with some basic customer care training?
