The forest park has everything you need for a great day out, whatever the time of year. Gatehouse of Fleet offers a wider range of places to eat and drink, and there are many attractions in and around the town including the ‘Mill on the Fleet’ Visitor Centre and Cardoness Castle.

Kirkcudbright, known as ‘the artist’s town’, attracts visitors throughout the year drawn by the harbour, the historic high street and the diverse range of annual events and visitor attractions. The popular programme of summer festivities culminates with the spectacular Tattoo, an event not to be missed. Visit the Machars with its fantastic rugged coastline and many little harbour villages including Portpatrick and Port William, or take a trip to the Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s most southerly point. A short walk from the lighthouse is an rspb reserve and visitor centre from which you can watch nesting birds on the cliffs via closed circuit cameras. You can also see hundreds of gannets on the nearby Scar Rocks. If you are lucky you may even see puffins or porpoises! Beach 8 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

We stayed in Machermore Castle with 10 adults and 4 children. The castle was perfect for us, the grounds lovely and we enjoyed 3 nights playing rounders and football in the beautiful gardens. The castle itself is a really good size with decent sized comfortable rooms, yes some of the room might look a little ‘tired’ but we thought it all added to the character and exactly what you’d expect to see, having booked to stay in an old castle, we loved it for everything that it was and we’ll definitely be coming back. The village is a short walk away and we enjoyed a meal out at The Crown and we also enjoyed a take away from Blue China which was the next village along (about half an hour drive). We also visited the local outdoor activity centre and did archery, which we all enjoyed. There’s a nice walk through the forest about 10 minutes away as well. A wonderful trip within a picturesque setting and gorgeous Machermore Castle - thank you A*

Fantastic accommodation in beautiful surroundings. There is plenty of space for everyone. The bedrooms and en-suites were warm and clean. The shared living areas allowed the party of 16 to come together to enjoy meals, board games and social time without being cramped. The grounds are beautiful and perfect for mini games of football or finding a quiet place to read or just chilling and enjoying the great weather. This is an amazing place to stay. We walked into Newton Stewart along the river walk a couple of times to visit local pubs and restaurants. The whole family had a fantastic time and would be very happy to stay here again! The local reps were very responsive and positive every time we contacted them.
