Minnow Cottage is praised for its idyllic riverside location, peaceful atmosphere, and proximity to Newton Stewart’s amenities and scenic walks. Guests appreciate the cosy log burner and dog-friendly environment, making it a great base for exploring the area. However, several reviews note that the property would benefit from improved maintenance, cleanliness, and attention to detail, particularly regarding the exterior and some facilities. Despite these issues, many guests enjoyed their stay and found the cottage comfortable and well-equipped for a relaxing holiday.
Cleanliness is a recurring concern, with multiple guests mentioning dust, cobwebs, dog hairs, and issues such as stained bedding and sticky floors. While some found the cottage clean and tidy, the majority felt a deep clean was needed.
The location is consistently highlighted as a major strength, with guests loving the riverside setting, tranquil surroundings, and easy access to town, walks, and local attractions.
Guests generally found the cottage cosy, especially with the log burner, and appreciated the comfortable bed. However, some mentioned issues with creaky beds, cold stone floors, and old sofas, which affected overall comfort for a few visitors.
Facilities and maintenance are frequently criticised, with reports of broken steps, peeling paint, faulty heaters, hot water issues, and lack of basic supplies. While the cottage is well-equipped in some respects, regular upkeep is needed.
Some guests appreciated the supply of logs and helpful guest book, but many noted a lack of essentials such as loo rolls, cleaning products, and starter packs. Please note that any gifts or supplies mentioned are not guaranteed.

Agree with alot of previous reviews that cottage needs alot of TLC. Very dusty throughout with cobwebs and white dog hairs. Bathroom heated rail is filthy and we had to fix toilet flush on day of arrival as no answer to calls to owner and property management. Loose tiles at front door a big trip hazard and over grown brambles at back need to be avoided to sit out. Quilt cover had only 1 button fastened and quilt inside had stains on. Floor was also sticky on 1 side of bed . The cottage is in a lovely area and would return for those river views alone but only if place was given a deep clean throughout and exterior was repainted and repainted. Sadly in its present state I wouldn't recommend.

The cottage is in a beautiful location and has so much potential but to mirror other reviews, it needs some serious tlc. I was very disappointed in the cleanliness.

Regular maintenance is not happening. Outside paintwork is badly peeling ,vegetation including Japanese knotweed is out of control and the patio is surrounded by flood barriers and sandbags. Also hot water for shaving and dishwashing isn't available. Pictures online are not accurate. There is no blind at bathroom so no privacy ,as this looks on to neighbours garden. We had the recent heatwave and had a winter duvet on the bed. Other issues are greasy ovenware (possibly because of lack of hot water) , no oven gloves, tea towels, bin liners or washing -up liquid. Basically it's main attribute is its position beside the river and close to town.
