The village of Thornhill lies between Dumfries and Sandquhar and its focal point is the Mercat Cross. The origins of the village date back as far as the Romans but the village in its present form was planned in 1714 and designed to be a staging post on the road between Dumfries and Glasgow. Immersed in rolling countryside and the low hills of Carsphairn and Lowther, there are plenty of walking and cycling opportunities around these ancient hills.
