Guests say

Greenhill cottage is praised for its stunning views, peaceful setting, and excellent location for exploring Skye and Portree. Guests appreciate the secure garden, comfortable beds, and cosy atmosphere, making it a great base for families and dog owners. While many found the cottage well-equipped and welcoming, several reviews mention that the property would benefit from improved cleanliness, maintenance, and some updates, particularly in the bathroom and kitchen. Overall, guests enjoyed their stay and the beautiful surroundings, with many expressing a desire to return.

Cleanliness is a recurring concern, with multiple guests reporting issues such as dirty kitchenware, mould in the bathroom, dust, and inadequate cleaning on arrival. Some guests had to clean upon arrival, and previous reviews indicate these issues have persisted over time.

The location is consistently highlighted as exceptional, offering breathtaking views, tranquillity, and convenient access to Portree and Skye's attractions. Guests loved the setting and the walks available from the doorstep.

Most guests found the cottage comfortable, with cosy beds, quality linen, and a welcoming atmosphere. However, some noted worn mattresses in the twin room and limited seating for larger groups, which affected comfort for some parties.

Facilities are generally adequate, with a well-equipped kitchen and secure garden. However, several guests mention maintenance issues such as a dated bathroom, faulty microwave, leaking guttering, and the need for general TLC and updates.

Some guests appreciated the secure garden and practical touches, but others noted the absence of promised welcome packs and basic supplies. Please note that gifts or welcome packs are not guaranteed.

Greenhill is a very special holiday home tucked away in a tiny settlement called Torvaig, near Portree. Greenhill is a detached bungalow and has been completely renovated to a very good standard of accommodation. There are three bedrooms, a family bathroom, a living/dining room with open fire, and a kitchen. It’s a perfect house for families because it has an amazing enclosed garden.

The location is truly spectacular, at the road end with one of the best views on the island, and that’s saying something. At the front of the property, the garden spills away to reveal the Sound of Raasay and the channel that leads to Portree harbour, as well as the striking hill Ben Tianavaig across the water. It’s a sublime situation and you will be blown away every time you gaze out to look.

Even though you’re so close to Portree, this location is amazingly quiet: partly because the road to Portree is a few miles round, and not direct, which means you’re still close for the shops, bars, cafés and restaurants, but have the advantage of peace and quiet, your own little tranquil slice of heaven. This quiet helps attract Skye’s wildlife, and just below the property and to the left where the land spills away to the coast, there are cliffs where sea eagles and golden eagles nest. Also there are regular sightings of dolphins at the mouth of Portree Bay, which you can see from Greenhill.

Just under 3 miles to Portree by car, you’re a shorter walk away. There’s a fabulous trail that loops right by the house and is a popular walk for locals and visitors to Portree alike. Staying at Greenhill you can use the Scorrybreac Trail to get in and out of the town. To the centre of Portree it is only a 1-mile walk. Beach 7 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.

Greenhill could be a lovely cottage with it's stunning views but it really needs to have a lot of TLC. Where to start.......the bathroom has mould on the ceiling above the shower and in the shower, the water pressure is shocking and the shower it self is being held together with cable ties. The heated towel rail dose not work, the toilet has a tendency to keep running after it has been flushed and there is paint coming off above the cistern and there is no where to put any of your toiletries.Kitchen nice and spacious but what let this room down was having to clean every plate bowl saucepan cup and utensils before using as they had all been put back dirty and I don't me a little bit of dirt I mean mean cups with left with milk residue folks with food still on them yuck!!!!! The oven top was also dirty but your left with not cleaning materials apart from one sponge one jay cloth and one tea towel to last the week. No wear to dry your cloths inside it took 3 days for clothing to dry. You could use the outside washing line but then you'd have to rewash your cloths and the pegs are filthy same with the line itself. No welcome pack as stated on the website and in the welcome book. No coal provided as it stated in the welcome book. The freezer needs defrosting as we had such a job opening the doors not enough plates especially if your a bigger party and only 1 over tray. The outside of the property needs a good tidy up as it dose looks like a dumping ground as your enter near the washing line. The fire grate is covered in hair and dust and the lamp shade in the living room on the table is covered in black dog hair. In the twin room the wardrobe door is hanging on by one hinge and is used for storage so not ideal if you wanted to hang your clothing. There is also a oddie left in there which we guessed was from the last lot of people staying. Also you were ment to receive a text message with the code for the key safe but we did not get anythingThe saving grace for this property is that view it is absolutely stunning

The location and views from the cottage is what stands out from others in this area. The beds were comfortable and made a good base to return to after a long day out. The overall cleanliness of the home was very disappointing, we arrived to 3 filled poo bags which had been left by the door, then to enter the kitchen to find dirty plates, cutlery and rotten food at the side by the washing machine, which consisted of rotten chips, spoons used tea bags, coffee and god know what else (which I had to clean - nearly made me sick), thankfully we had brought all of camping utensils and pots and pans. Other things weren’t great like the bathroom door not closing, ceiling had mould in parts, used dirty tissues by the bed, the fire hadn’t been emptied in a very long time so that needed to be emptied as it was full. I tried to contact the person who is the main contact in the welcome book but no answer to my calls or emails which consisted of pictures of the above. We are back home now and still no response.

We stayed here for two weeks and, while the location and views are beautiful, unfortunately the condition and cleanliness of the cottage were a real disappointment. The views are fantastic and the location is lovely, but the property is looking quite run down on the outside and would benefit from some attention and maintenance.More importantly, the cleanliness on arrival was not up to an acceptable standard. The kitchen was dirty and there was faeces on the bathroom floor, meaning we had to clean before we could properly settle into our holiday. There was also mould and flaking paint/plaster in the bathroom, which made the room feel tired and poorly maintained. What is particularly disappointing is that we noticed reviews from around two years ago mentioning similar issues with cleanliness. It is frustrating to see that these concerns appear not to have been properly addressed. The cottage has enormous potential because of its beautiful views and fantastic location, but the cleanliness, maintenance and overall condition really need to be improved.
