Sealock Cottage is an absolute gem of a holiday home on the outskirts of Inverness. Set within the characterful fishertown of Clachnaharry, Sealock Cottage enjoys views out across the Caledonian Canal and Beauly Firth towards the Black Isle and Kessock Bridge. It’s a truly awesome spot. The terraced cottage gets its name from the Caledonian Canal which passes just a stone’s throw away. The sea lock that separates the canal from the Beauly Firth is a few hundred yards from, and within view of, the cottage.

Entering the property from the private driveway at the back, you will find three lovely bedrooms on the ground floor (two en-suite double rooms and a twin room), as well as a bathroom with a freestanding bath, and a utility room. The first floor has been transformed into an outstanding open plan space with essentially a wall of glass to make the most of the sea views. The interior design is clever and simply stunning. The canal is still a busy waterway and you’ll mainly see pleasure craft passing through on jaunts to or from the west coast of Scotland, which the Caledonian Canal masterfully links up with.

The canal rises from Clachnaharry and its sea lock on the Beauly Firth to mighty Loch Ness, and then charts a route through the Highlands to Fort William and the sea. It’s a masterpiece built by Thomas Telford in the early 19th century. Clachnaharry is an old fishing village from the late 18th century. It has history going further back, but what you can see is mainly late 18th and 19th-century buildings. The Far North Line railway also passes through Clachnaharry. The village has a wonderful inn which is only two minutes’ walk from Sea Lock Cottage. The village is now a part of Inverness, which you can walk into along the canal and footpaths. The centre of the city is 1½ miles away, so you have the best of both worlds: a coastal village setting with sea views, but the restaurants, bars and cafes of Inverness only a walk away.
