No smoking.. South-facing and semi-detached, Avenel Cottage has a wonderful outlook across Yetholm Loch to the Cheviot Hills beyond. It is set in a gloriously peaceful location on the edge of the Old Lochside Estate, just 2 miles from Town Yetholm. The living/dining room has views over the loch, a wonderful oak beamed fireplace, comfortable sofas.
On the first floor the main bedroom has an imposing wood carved headboard on the kingsize bed and an additional single bed. The second bedroom has a ¾ size double bed and a cupboard full of teddy bears. The garden to the back of the cottage is fully enclosed and has sunny, sheltered seating areas. Direct access to paths adjacent to the loch. Nearby, there are the lovely border towns of Kelso, 7 miles, Jedburgh, 14 miles, and Melrose, 23 miles. These attractive towns are well worth exploring with many good eating places, art and craft galleries, local food producers and ancient abbeys. There are many local castles and country houses to visit, along with the Northumbrian coast, Holy Island and the Farne Islands, which can all be easily enjoyed within a day. Shop and pubs 2½ miles, other restaurants, shops and services 7 miles.

Edward our host was very informative prior to our arrival. Whilst on site, he was available to answer questions. The cottage was an absolute delight. The log fire was a wonderful addition during our November stay, with enough logs supplied for our full stay. The cottage was well equipped. Great location for dog walking, and nature watching, including the addition of a bird hide, which was great for watching the wildlife on the Loch. Pond is a great addition for fishing. Good location for local attractions with Kelso only being a 10 minute drive, including a large Sainsburys super market. Outstanding views from the front of the cottage. Very relaxing and will definitely return.

We have a short weekend break at Avenel Cottage. Good points: lovely location, only 5 minutes drive or about a 20 minute walk from two pubs, about a 15 minute drive from a good Sainsburys and Kelso. The countryside around is lovely and you are only about 45 minutes from some lovely coastal spots. The owner is obviously keen to be environmentally friendly reusing old furniture and using a biomass boiler. He very kindly put the heating on in advance of our arrival and the house was nice and cosy.Not so good points: unfortunately, some aspects of the accommodation did not meet with expectations. The kitchen is in need of a bit of make over, but most concerning were the cooking facilities such as the oven and microwave interiors which hadn't been cleaned in awhile and some of the pans were old and way past their use by date. The bathroom really lets the property down, it is very tatty, tired and definitely in need of refurbishment. There was no proper blind at the bathroom window for night time privacy, the bath is old with nasty stains in the bottom, the loo has a mind of it's own, the sink plug was caked in yellow paint. These are things that are easily sort and really no excuse. Sorry but won't be returning to this one.
