Guests say

Montrose Apartment in Selkirk is praised for its cleanliness, spaciousness, and comprehensive facilities. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches and the property's suitability as a base for exploring the Borders. While some mention traffic noise and parking challenges, the overall sentiment is positive, with the apartment offering a comfortable and well-equipped stay.

Guests consistently note the apartment's cleanliness, with several reviews highlighting its thorough and disinfected state, contributing to a high level of satisfaction in this category.

The location is generally appreciated for its proximity to local shops and as a base for exploring the area. However, some guests mention traffic noise and parking difficulties, which slightly lowers the score.

The apartment is described as comfortable and home-like, with guests finding it well-suited for relaxation. Some concerns about traffic noise and inadequate kitchen space are noted, but overall comfort is rated highly.

Facilities are extensive and well-received, with guests mentioning a range of provided equipment. Some issues with WiFi and the unconventional placement of the shower are noted, but the facilities generally meet guests' needs.

While guests mention welcome touches like champagne and shortbread, there is not enough consistent information about thoughtfulness in the form of gifts or special amenities to provide a score. It should be noted that such gifts are not guaranteed.

About this property

In the heart of the Scottish Borders and nestled close to the market square in The Royal and Ancient Burgh of Selkirk, the apartment makes a great place to spend a few days or extended break while exploring this fabulous and intriguing part of Scotland.

Selkirk itself has a fascinating history going back to William Wallace and more recently links with Sir Walter Scott. The other Borders Towns are close by including Galashiels, Hawick, Melrose and Jedburgh, while Edinburgh itself is only a 40 minute drive or pleasant train ride on the recently reopened Borders Railway. Montrose House is so called because the Earl and Marquis of Montrose stayed here just before the Battle of Philiphaugh in 1645. He was known to be a brave and proven General but was nonetheless heavily defeated with huge loss of life, although he himself survived. There is a commemorative plaque of his stay on the wall of the apartment.

The nearby Philiphaugh Estate has various trails and riverside footpaths along the Ettrick Water. One of the trails leads to the battlefield so you can imagine the scene of 5,500 men in the desperate struggle between the Covenanters and Royalists. The Estate offers more peaceful attractions as well which include a nice tearoom close to the Salmon Viewing Centre

Sir Walter Scott best known as a writer, also served as Sheriff for 33 years and his legal connections should not be forgotten. The court house that he presided over is open to the public and only a short walk from the apartment and main town square. Walter Scott's life and times can be further explored at nearby Abbotsford house. The beautiful stately home of Bowhill House is not to be missed, only 3 miles from the town. The house is set in superb grounds with access to woodland walks to suit all and younger generations will have a whale of a time enjoying organised orienteering package and amazing adventure playground- ideal for children of any age and big kids too!

The wonderful Borders scenery provides a super backdrop to lots of outdoor pursuits including golf, mountain biking, fishing on renowned rivers and lochs or following peaceful footpaths through the countryside.

Quirky house in a great location. Once the heating was on, the property soon warmed up and the beds were comfortable. Do be prepared to sift through a comical amount of clutter to find anything you need - most notably in the kitchen where there is no space to put any of your own food as it is full of 15 years of kitchen gadgets (which could do with PAT testing being updated)! Worth noting that there is single glazing, so you need to run the heating a lot of the time and roadworks outside are very noisy inside. A comfortable sofa would also be nice! Not all negative as it has everything you need and there has been an effort to make it cozy with heated matrasses and plenty blankets. The heated towel rails, airer and fan were great for drying clothes and there was no lack of space with the many rooms!

Montrose Apartment is a great place to stay when visiting the Borders area. The apartment had everything we needed, is clean and comfortable, and is a great base to start one of the many walks around Selkirk.

Montrose was perfectly situated. There is a small parking area(about 10spaces but free from 1730-0700) only about 80yards from the property. If you come from the south side they are both on the right (property first) if that car park is full there is a bigger car park (as you face the small car park ..look right there is a road looking up hill ..its straight in front). I will start with the positives first..The flat was very clean ..it has all the things you'd expect eg fridge cooker microwave smoothie/blender toaster. The heating system easy to follow. The shower is in the corner of the kitchen ..you will understand when you stay there.. there is also 2 bedrooms and dining room. Now the negatives but not as bad as what you might think. On arriving we tried the WiFi on the Internet box ..it didn't match ..I txt the owners and they said it was in the folder in the kitchen ..it worked..the toilet is small and just becareful as there is a step leading upto the toilet itself ..we tripped on it a few times. You do hear the traffic going past at all times as you are on the main road. Would we stay there again ..aye would
