There is plenty to explore in the area, and a good place to walk is 2 miles away at Ardmore Point with unique rock formations, sea cliffs, fishing, and a notable bird-watching area. Also worth a visit is Dumbarton Castle and Rock, 5 miles away. Dumbarton Castle has a longer recorded history than any other castle in Britain!
There is a small completely self-contained owners-only studio/garden cottage with its entrance, shuttered/screened windows, and a tiny self-contained garden adjoining the main house at Springvale. The owner uses this studio/garden cottage intermittently.
Cardross is a conservation village and has its golf course, established 120 years ago, as well as a bowling, tennis and football club, post office, newsagent and pharmacy, and a village pub that caters for meals. Cardross train station is a 5-minute walk along a shore tarmac path, with frequent service to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the Highlands.
Local attractions include Ardardan Estate Working Farm with a nursery and tearoom and nearby Geilston Garden. Looked after by the National Trust for Scotland, Geilston is a delightful garden typical of the small country estates on the banks of the Clyde, purchased by merchants and industrialists in the 18th and 19th centuries. Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park are very close - it’s just 6 miles to Balloch on the south shore of the loch.
This beautiful area has so much to offer with open spaces, sheltered bays, and islands to explore. Its inland waters are famous as one of the finest water sports venues in Scotland. The area is ideal for walkers and cyclists of all abilities and boasts a magnificent diversity of scenery with dramatic peaks, waterfalls, hidden caves, and mysterious, forest-covered slopes. Ayrshire and Burns’ country lie to the south, and the Western Highlands are to the north. Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Stirling are all easily reached for a day out.

The size of the house was amazing, with plenty of space for all 12 of us. The garden was also huge so we had lots of room for the kids to run around. The location was described as close to a sandy beach but it wasn’t a beach, and was rather disappointing. Inside, the house does need some work. The banister on the stairs is loose and a danger. The fire doors are too powerful and we had to be very careful the little ones didn’t get caught in them. The shared bathroom and toilet had no lock on the doors, and two of the other toilets had fault locks meaning two of our party got locked in them. Also things like cleanliness standards were lower than expected. We had to wash all of the cutlery before use. The toilet floors needed cleaning. Overall this is a lovely sized house and could be beautiful, but it is in need of some work to be rated higher.

Beware – Lost £200 Over an Unwritten RuleSpringvale is a lovely house and garden – but my experience with the owner was dreadful. After booking via cottages.com, I was sent an unusually long list of “rules” from the owner warning that any breach could forfeit our deposit. Because of this, we double-checked several points with Springvale’s housekeeper during our stay and left the place spotless. Nowhere did it say you couldn’t move the patio table. The table was cast iron and heavy, but easily moved by two people in our group. We shifted it only a short distance (on level ground) into the sun – carefully, with no damage. After our stay, the owner withheld £200 of our £350 deposit, claiming the table had to be dismantled and rebuilt in its original position. He claimed (with no proof of a quote), that the table would need 8 man hours to move. This “rule” was never mentioned, and his story kept changing about how far it was moved and how heavy it was. He lied about the table not having been moved in 10 years – something disproven by his own Facebook photos – and his tone in messages felt rude, condescending and bullying. We apologised for the inconvenience but did not receive the same courtesy or respect in response. We considered legal action but decided it wasn’t worth the stress.Lovely location – but I left feeling robbed. Future guests: get every rule in writing or risk losing your money. Personally, I’d avoid it altogether.
