Padraig’s Cottage is a delightful, detached property, its sun room giving magnificent views of the Uist mountains. Set at the edge of Loch Roag, one of the best known fishing lochs in South Uist, it is a superb base for exploring the islands. The beautiful white sands of Howbeg beach are half a mile from the cottage and the spectacular machair runs parallel to the beach. It is a haven for wildlife such as the elusive corncrake, with hen harriers, seals, otters and golden eagles also regularly spotted. During the summer months the machair becomes an amazing mass of colour, peppered with a variety of wildflowers, including rare orchids.
Neighbouring Howmore (Tobha Mòr) is steeped in history with the remains of four or five churches and chapels still surviving. The islands from Eriskay to Berneray are linked by causeways, so travelling between them all is easy. You can catch ferries from Eriskay to Barra or from Berneray to Harris and Lewis for memorable days out. Benbecula has shops, pubs, restaurants, library, swimming pool - and the airport. It offers a stepping stone to North Uist, where in Lochmaddy, you can visit Taigh Chearsabhagh (an award-winning museum and arts centre) or the Uist Outdoor Centre where a wide range of activities including sea kayaking, diving and whale watching are available. Take boat trips out to the remote island of St Kilda and the Monach Isles. By road, visit the pretty island of Berneray. There are many historic and archaeological sites to explore, including The Bonnie Prince Charlie Trail, Trinity Temple at Carinish and Kildonan Museum. It is truly the most perfect location to unwind and enjoy the peaceful and scenic surroundings in this wonderful landscape. Beach ½ mile. Shops, pubs and restaurants 10 miles.

This was our third stay in Padraig's Cottage which is ideally located on the shores of our favourite fishing loch - Loch Roag. Rarely do you enjoy breakfast whilst observing two owls hunting for food outside the dining room window! The owner, Vicky, is extremely helpful, and readily available by phone for any queries. We are returning again to the cottage in September. As the main cook and washer upper for four fishermen my only request would be for a dishwasher (but this is a minor detail)!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Padraig's cottage. We loved the views and enjoyed sitting in the sun room looking out over the loch and mountains. We thought the cottage was much better than we had expected from the photos on-line. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, and the kitchen was extremely well equipped. There are binoculars provided to spot the wildlife, and there is an amazing library of books including one about the owner that I enjoyed reading. We had a lovely, relaxing holiday and if we were to return to the Outer Hebrides we would book again.

Padraig's Cottage must be the best holiday home we have every stayed in, and that says a lot. There are wonderful views over the machair and to the hills from every window, and we saw hen harriers and short-eared owls almost every day flying round the cottage. The kitchen is particularly well equipped with lots of pans, utensils and crockery - more than in our own house. There is a very comprehensive house guide to local facilities and lots of books, maps and guides including the local OS maps. There is also lots of storage space for visitors' food and clothing which is always helpful. Word of caution for EV owners, there aren't many charging points on the Uists and half of them were not working.
