The Retreat Cottage offers a homely and welcoming experience, with hosts Danny and Helen providing thoughtful touches such as a generous care package and fresh eggs. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, beautiful scenery, and the cottage's proximity to local attractions. While some guests encountered maintenance issues, others found the cottage clean, warm, and well-equipped, making it a recommended stay for those seeking a rural retreat.
Reviews are mixed regarding cleanliness. Some guests reported a musty smell, unclean bathroom, and dirty kitchenware, while others found the cottage to be clean and well-maintained. The variance in experiences suggests inconsistency in cleaning standards.
The cottage is praised for its beautiful surroundings and quiet rural setting, with local attractions within driving distance. However, the narrow and winding access road and the need to drive to amenities slightly affect the convenience of the location.
Guests generally find the beds comfortable and the cottage warm, especially during a stay in March. However, some guests mentioned uncomfortable furniture and issues with the property's structure, such as springy floorboards, which detracts from the overall comfort.
Facilities have received criticism for maintenance issues, including broken shower and taps, incorrect kitchen tap temperatures, and insecure patio doors. Some guests also noted a lack of instructions for appliances. These issues indicate a need for improvement in facilities and maintenance.
The hosts are commended for their thoughtfulness, offering a generous welcome package and fresh eggs. While these gestures are highly appreciated, it should be noted that such personal touches may vary and are not guaranteed for every stay.

We arrived 1 & a half hours after check in time & the cottage wasn't ready. The first thing we noticed was the very strong musty smell & every single window was wide open. The smell seemed to get worse over the course of the week. The shower was broken, the framework was held on with sellotape. The shower tray didn't drain which led to the bathroom being flooded. The cold tap was extremely loose. It moved when used & turned the opposite way.The bathroom hadn't been cleaned, there was dirt & dust everywhere, including the used bar of soap that was left on the shelf!!We informed the owner who promised that he would fix the shower & tap on the Sunday. We never saw him again. The kitchen taps were the wrong way round, the hot was cold & the cold was hot. They were also very loose & leaking. The coffee in the jar was a solid mass & unusable. The grill was dirty with baked on food. No instructions on how to use the hob. Broken mugs & glasses in the cupboards. Broken cupboard doors. Only 3 chairs around the table, the cottage sleeps 4.The sofa was heavily stained, smelt & uncomfortable. We could only watch iplayer on the smart tv as it wasn't connected to an ariel or tv box.Window latches didn't close. A few light bulbs were not loose, the one in the dining room didn't work at all.Patio door wasn't secure as the metal plate was missing from the frame. There was only one plug in each bedroom, both behind the beds so no where to plug in a hairdryer near a mirror. There were lamps either side of the bed but one wasn't plugged in because it couldn't reach the plug socket. The floorboards in one of the bedrooms were springy. The dipped everytime you walked into the room. It was like they weren't attached to the joists properly. The garden isn't dog friendly. Not secured at all, with low walls & gaps in the fences which backs on to a busy road.We came back one day to find old broken garden furniture dumped by the front door, blocking part of the garden!! No explanation at all. Please don't waste your money. It was the worst cottage we have ever stayed in 😟
