Porthmadog, a thriving harbour town, is situated on the beautiful Glaslyn Estuary. At Porthmadog, the Welsh Highland Railway and the Ffestiniog Railway depart for scenic journeys through Snowdonia to Blaenau Ffestiniog and Caerforn, respectively. Borth Y Gest, a picturesque village with cliffs and coves, is easily accessible via foot or by car. Just down the coast is Portmeirion, an Italianate village that has gained worldwide renown for its distinct architecture and culture. Portmeirion is known all over the world as the setting for the TV shows The Prisoner and the final episode of Cold Feet, and it is located on a secluded peninsula overlooking miles of sandy beaches and wooded areas. Black Rock Sands and other unspoiled beaches in the vicinity have stretches of sand that go on for miles, and there are also a couple of castles in the area (Criccieth and Harlech). There's something for everyone at nearby Zip World Slate Caves and Bounce Below, which is home to exhilarating zip lines and underground caverns to explore. An excellent base from which to explore Snowdonia and the Lleyn Peninsula.
