The bustling harbour town of Porthmadog lies on the Glaslyn Estuary and enjoys a stunning setting. The gateway to the Snowdonia National Park, Porthmadog is full of individual shops and restaurants, and home to the Ffestiniog Railway and the Welsh Highland railway where you can travel by steam through spectacular Snowdonia scenery, to Blaenau Ffestiniog or Caerforn . The pretty village of Borth Y Gest, with its cliffs and coves, is a short walk or drive from the town. The well known and unique Italianate village of Portmeirion is just down the coast. Situated on a rugged clifftop on its own private peninsula, Portmeirion, famous as the location of the TV show The Prisoner and the final episode of Cold Feet, is surrounded by miles of sandy beaches and woodlands. The area also boasts castles at Criccieth and Harlech, and superb unspoilt beaches such as Black Rock Sands, where the sands stretch as far as the eye can see. Our main reason for dissatisfaction was the inaccurate information in the advertised property listing. For example the property description states there are two bathrooms, the main bathroom upstairs and a shower room downstairs. The shower room however, does not exist, the only facility downstairs is an outside toilet. To make matters worse the main bathroom had frosted glass panels in the door, which was far from ideal, as when the light was on in the bathroom, there was no privacy whatsoever. We went with another couple and would never have booked if we had known that there wasnât separate bathrooms. Also the description states there is a log burner, and further on that all âfuel and powerâ is included in the rent, which suggests that a supply of logs would be available, they werenât. Cleanliness was generally very good, apart from the oven and there was a small mark on one of the pillow cases which worryingly we thought was blood. Overall the cottage was well located, and would be ideal for a couple to stay in but definitely not suitable as it is for larger groups. As for Menai Cottages, I emailed them whilst we were there, outlining some of my concerns and they still havenât had the decency to acknowledge or reply to me.
