No smoking.. With a relaxing hot tub on the patio, this gorgeous detached holiday property, adjacent to the owners’ home, has been finished to an excellent standard. There is an open plan living area downstairs, complete with a warming wood burner for chilly evenings, and French doors opening out onto the patio. There are walks straight from the door and the Coed y Brenin Forest Park is close by, with tumbling waterfalls and leafy paths, and with cycle hire available.
It is just 3 miles to the pretty town of Dolgellau, offering a range of places to eat and drink. Dolgellau is also the starting point of the Mawddach Trail, a level 9 mile walk along the old railway line to Barmouth. The large sandy beach at Barmouth is well worth a visit – don’t forget your bucket and spade! In the other direction is Bala home to the largest natural lake in Wales, and the Bala Lake Railway, offering a memorable journey by steam train along the lake shore. Beach 11 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

We were made very welcome at Bryn Aled and thoroughly enjoyed our week there, even if the heatwave curtailed any serious hillwalking. The cottage sits on a wooded hillside with wide views, clean air and a surprisingly rich soundscape of birdsong; on clear nights the stars were excellent too. With the delightful Torrent and Precipice walks only a few minutes away, we still had good short‑walk options. The children made full use of the hot tub—and were equally delighted by the military aircraft that occasionally threaded the valley.The only practical limitation was the small fridge, which meant several shopping trips to Dolgellau. As the shop lies on the route back to Bryn Aled, this was more of a mild inconvenience than a disruption.Dolgellau itself has a very different character from the northern part of Snowdonia: quieter, even over the Bank Holiday weekend. From there we visited Harlech Castle, Aberdovey for the beach, and Corris for the craft market. We also walked the 11 km Volcano Trail at Coed y Brenin, which made a very good day out. We had hoped to tackle Cadair Idris and the Rhinog hills, but the heat made those ambitions unrealistic.

Great cottage and hot tub. Very clean and well equipped apart from a chopping board!!Lovely hosts very helpful and friendly. Barmouth beach is great. Would be lovely in summer.
