About this property

Penrhyndeudraeth 3.4 miles. Resting in the peaceful village of Tan Y Bwlch, North Wales is Mill Cottage, a charming Grade II listed cottage perfect for a couple or small family to discover the surrounding landscapes. Constructed circa 1792, the cottage is attached to an old water mill, and is situated in the Vale of Ffestiniog, and was originally the mill, providing flour for the Tan y Bwlch Estate. The mill stream which fed the water wheel is still in place, although has now been diverted into the waterfall at one end of the property. Offering off-road parking and a delightful multilevel garden as well as being ideally placed for near to the mountains and footpaths of the Snowdonia National Park, the cottage provides an excellent base for exploring this scenic area of Wales. The whole of the Tan y Bwlch Estate, as well as the mill pond which feeds the mill stream, are situated in the woodland behind the property, just a few minutes walk away, where there are woodlands walks, two further lakes and lakeside picnic areas. Arriving at the property, leave your coats and shoes in the hallway before making your way into the well-equipped kitchen to rustle up a delicious meal for your loved ones. The kitchen hosts a handy washing machine so you can freshen up your clothes between activities, along with an electric oven and hob, a microwave, and the all-important kettle and toaster to assist with whipping up your breakfast and morning cup of tea. From here, make your way to the dining room to savour your meals as a family at the dining table; the dining room is home to a delightful dining table, and beautiful character beams and a slate hearth. Relax and unwind in the sitting room on the cosy sofas as the woodburning stove gently warms the room around you, perfect for the chillier evenings. When sleep calls, climb the stairs to the well-presented bedrooms; each bedroom boasts views of the garden and surrounding greenery and are home to quality beds, original features and spacious built in wardrobes. On the first floor you will find a double bedroom and a single bedroom you can look forward to retiring to after a busy day of exploring, along with a spacious family bathroom with a bath, a shower, a basin, and a toasty heated towel rail where the group can prepare for the day ahead. Outside, the multilevel garden is a delight, offering sun traps and shade areas amongst the mature plants and flowers, a quintessential cottage garden. The higher area of the garden has been left as a wildlife haven, paths have been cut through the grasses and wildflowers, where you are welcome to walk. Fascinatingly, the outbuilding at this dwelling has been identified as a building of Special Scientific Interest, due to a small colony of rare bats that peacefully roost there; be sure to take care while you look out for them! The Ffestiniog railway runs through the woodland behind the property, and the whistle can often be heard at various times of the day. If you can tear yourself away from this characterful cottage, venture out to one of the local pubs for your evening meal; The Grapes Hotel offers hearty meals and real ales, or perhaps head into the picturesque seaside town of Porthmadog and dine at Spooner's Cafe, Bar and Grill. Porthmadog and Black Rock beach is within easy reach by car from the cottage and boasts a pristine sandy beach and plenty of eateries to fuel your excursions. There is a train station about a mile or so from the property, and there are walks along the river/estuary which runs through the Vale close by, and the Maentwrog nature reserve is also a few minutes walk away from the property. For activities during your stay, Snowdonia Tours offer a plethora of guided tours around the popular and hidden gem attractions within the Snowdonia National Park. The area as a whole is a haven for walkers and cyclists through the varying terrains and stunning scenery. Animal and nature lovers will love an afternoon at Gwaith Powdwr Nature Reserve, where you can wander the woodland and cherish the abundance of nature and wildlife. A short drive will take you to the renowned Italianate village of Portmerion, a site not to miss while you are discovering this gorgeous area, which is home to colourful architecture and a truly unique experience while in Wales. Mill Cottage promises a relaxing retreat in a breath-taking area.

Situated amongst the rolling hills of Snowdonia lies Penrhyndeudraeth, a large village boasting a good variety of shops and restaurants as well as a Post Office and a train station which runs along the Ffestiniog Railway. The renowned, Italianate village of Portmeirion rests just two miles away from the village and is a popular tourist destination for its colourful architecture and filming location for the TV show, The Prisoner. Within easy reach of Penrhyndeudraeth is the harbour town of Porthmadog and the slate town of Blaenau Ffestiniog.
