What our customers say about their holidays

Had a lovely stay at Penlaurel.
Very comfy and plenty of space to relax, cook, or enjoy the lounges in. Also a nice welcome of bubbly & chocs. The garden was large but due to some wet weather I found some flagstones very slippery underfoot. I kept my dog on his stretchy lead as parts of the garden seemed less secure for my dog and animals were entering overnight and toileting. However the garden is so big, my dog still had plenty of space to play in. The hot tub was large and welcome after a day of walking and exploring Cornwall. The hot tub is set back in amongst trees and shrubs, which was nice and private. But as the light fades in autumn we found there was not enough garden light to clearly see the entrance to the hot tub and tripped against steps partially hidden by an overgrown bush on the first night. Defo grab a torch from the property or use the one on your phone if going into the hot tub during the evenings. A garden broom would be useful so visitors can sweep away fern leaves etc away from the hot tub as we tracked some back into the house. On the last morning I found the neighbours gardener in our garden using an electric saw at height chopping down tree branches, with our side gate open. Thankfully my dog was on his lead, or he wouldâve run straight out of the gate. The bloke didnât seem remotely concerned with his behaviour and I had to quite firmly tell him to leave and shut the gate. He hadnât even knocked at the property to ask if it was ok to come into the garden. I was fuming. I would recommend a lock for the gate to prevent another near miss. Overall we had a fantastic time, in this beautiful property. It is well located for visits to Tintagel, Bude, Padstow, Bodwin moors to name a few. I would recommend.

On arrival it was a struggle to open the main door.
When entering we had noticed lack of cleanliness windows were all smudged and marked mirrors were also dirty too, cobwebs found everywhere. The downstairs toilet light was constantly flickering when using it. The upstairs landing light also flickered, the master bedroom main light was not working at all (but got replaced when got in touch with maintenance), the main bathroom had broken floor tiles, the second set of double doors in the living area was a wrestling match to open close and lock so we didnt open them again, there was a chip on the hob in the kitchen, all the lamp shades need cleaning or replacing as they were dirty, the hot tub cover was covered in bird droppings which had not been cleaned in a while, they had used slate surroundings the area so be aware that you'll need some foot wear getting in and out of the hot tub, I'd also recommend an umbrella whilst in the hotub to avoid getting bird dropping on you. It should really have a canopy over it like one of the neighbouring hottubs has. Could do with replacing sofas badly worn and sunken and lingering smell off dog ( which i understand it was a pet friendly accomadation but could be cleaned properly) there are some good poits though, the beds were comfy the hotub it self was nice, when your not getting bird droppings on you, the showers in bath main bathroom and ensuite were good. The wifi helped alot as it is a complete signal deadspot, plenty of cutlery and crockery provided. We would stay again if a few upgrades and general maintenance were done. We paid 850 for the week and although was cheap for the accommodation you can see why it was cheap.

Whereas there were positives about the house we were disappointed with the following: - We were there for a 2 week holiday and had expected a mid-stay clean, and change of bath towels and bedding.
On calling Sykes during our first week we discovered that this wasn't part of the holiday deal but the member of staff that we spoke to said that they could arrange for a clean on Saturday 3rd August - all we needed to do was leave the key in the key box when we left for the day. We did this but disappointingly arrived back at the end of the day on Saturday to find that no-one had been (we also left the key on Monday 5th just in case - still no one came). We ended up cleaning the bathrooms and washing the bath towels ourselves although there were no adequate cleaning cloths nor any bleach or toilet cleaner. - the throws on the 2 sofas were very dirty and pretty disgusting - we washed these for the next guests - we arrived on Saturday 27th July to find the outside bin overflowing with rubbish from the previous guests (not a great first impression) - there was no recycling system in place at all. We ended up sorting our own recycling and taking it to the local Sainsbury's where there was a recycling facility - some of the cutlery and crockery was very dirty - we couldn't get the dishwasher to work at all whilst we were there (there was no instruction manual in the house for us to refer to) - in relation to a previous guests complaint about the loose slate tile on the step outside, we did receive a message from someone at Sykes to say that this would be fixed - they said someone would come on Saturday 3rd August between 12 and 2pm; no one came to fix this during this time nor any other time during our stay

The actual house itself is lovely apart from the cellar door underneath the front living room under the rug.
There were several issues that we were extremely disappointed in that really took the shine off our trip given the amount we paid for the week. The kids were very excited about the hottub but it was surrounded by large bushes preventing any natural light getting through, our kids were too scared to stay in after 10 minutes. The garden had an extremely rusty bench that only had 3 legs that was both dangerous (giving we have young children) as well as being an eye sore. The bbq was tiny and filthy so not fit for use. The garden was full of sharp leaf holly bushes that injured both our kids and dogs on a daily basis. There were several weeds/nettles across the garden which was generally unkept. Another dangerous point is that the angle of the driveway was about 45oC from the road facing downhill, we had several near misses when reversing out into a very busy road linking local towns. I also attempted to walk our dogs on a daily basis prior to going out for the day but the country roads by the house are very narrow with no pavements with cars often driving at 60mph. Unless youâre willing to drive there are no places within a reasonable and safe walking distance. Overall, whilst the house was nice, we do feel we overpaid considerably for our trip on reflection, which is a first for us having used Sykes for years⦠I had pictures to back up all of our claims including the hot tub and bench but there doesnât appear to be an upload option.

It was mentioned in the listing that there would be a swimming pool on site however that was not the case as when we got there some people said it was a plan about 5years ago and not got pushed any further.
Also the cleanliness of the house was not great, there was cobwebs everywhere, inches of dust on top of wardrobes and on blinds etc. Hence all the cobwebs there were loads of spiders crawling about which is understandable because of the season changes but for the amount there was it was not nice and comfortable to sleep with. Speaking of comfort, the beds and pillows were ridiculous, I had 4 pillows to myself but felt like I had 1, Iâve got chronic back pain originally and so has my mum who has got a medical condition where her back needs to be risen and we were both in so much discomfort due to the pillows being so flat. The mattress itself was average, no life or bounce to it. We had a maintenance man come out as I went to put the heating on in my room, as soon as I did I could smell gas. My mum said itâs probably just dust I can smell, as she went to check behind the radiator, the whole radiator fell off the wall and was hanging on by tiny temporary screws. Immediately turned the radiator off, took pictures and sent them straight to the people in charge. Few hours later they sent out that maintenance man who fixed it straight away but mentioned the mattresses hadnât been changed in over 11years, when the site first ever opened?? Besides all that, had a great stay, liked how big and spacious the place was along with the fact that they provided a smart TV where you could watch Netflix, Disney etc.
