What our customers say about their holidays
Cath - Verified booking
Having booked and stayed at Lakeside often over the last ten years this stay will be our last.
We are three ladies who have been friends for a long time and enjoy paper crafting together. Lakeside has been our crafting holiday get away for the last ten years. Sadly, since being taken over, Helpful Holidays prices have risen, in fact the cost of our long weekend in winter months (always November or January) has actually more than doubled. In addition to this a Christmas tree had been left out in the dining room; the bathroom & en suite were cold and without heating as the heated towel rails had not been switched on; the lock had come off the side gate and we were unable to secure; the vertical blind in the kitchen had broken and been mended with sellotape so came down when the blinds were moved; in previous years we had been left with sufficient kindling and logs for at least one fire but on this occasion there was kindling but no logs. Similarly, before there has always been pump hand cleanser/soap on the basins in the downstairs WC, en suite and bathroom but there was none in the WC or en suite; there was no toilet roll in the family bathroom or WC. It appears as though profits are the main focus of Sykes as they have both increased prices and cut costs. Very disappointed so have booked elsewhere and with a different company for January 2020. ***Owner Response*** Thank you for taking the time to complete feedback for Lakeside. As a valued customer of many years, we are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay this year. Itâs a shame you did not let us know about the issues whilst you were at the property, if we had of known we would have done our utmost to help. We have spoken to the owners and they wish to apologise that the Christmas tree being left at the property and for the lack of kindling/logs and soap. Both incidents are being investigated by the owner with their housekeeper. Thank you for bringing the maintenance issues to our attention, these will be corrected and ready for the upcoming season. The heating at Lakeside is controlled by a thermostat and the rails have temperature gauges which allow for them to be adjusted to suit personal preferences. These will usually be on for your arrival, however, should they have been overlooked, they are very easy to turn on. Thank you for enjoying so many previous holidays at Lakeside. We are sorry that it was not perfect on this occasion, but we do hope that overall you enjoyed your stay and that we will see you again in the future.

Scylla View is a great place to stay - you are literally at the bottom of the cliff, almost on the beach.
The flat has great views and is very comfortable and cosy. There are two bedrooms, a good shower/loo plus a small kitchen area in the open plan sitting room. There is no table, but a large bar with stools round to sit and eat. The pans are good to cook with. It is obvious that a lot of thought has gone into the planning and decor. It has a joint entrance with the owner's home, which is accessed off a large deck, and is situated above the other one bed apartment - the cafe and surf school are below/behind the owners home. The cliff is steep, and it does take some time to get down and up as it is not just the 166 steps but also the long drag up the tarmacked lane to the the top of the cliff - I am fat and in my 50's and my husband has had both hips and a knee done and we managed it without any problem....but needed a lot of puff. We would have struggled without the hoist for our luggage. You do need to be very organised with regard to supplies - it is isn't the sort of place to run out of anything! There were plenty of teabags, a couple of coffee pods for the machine, salt & pepper grinders, a tea towel, oven gloves, bedding and towels, dettox, a cleaning cloth and a scourer provided, but don't forget oil for cooking and any herbs etc. In season Jim and Nina will cook you fish or scampi and chips etc. There is also a cafe near the top of the cliffs which opens all year round until about 4pm and will provide hot pasties to take out on a day trip or lunch, or tea and cake/scones. If you go over the road there is a restaurant in Whitesands Bay Holiday Park, which apparently does a carvery on Sundays. The views are breathtaking and the beaches are just beautiful.

The property was large so perfect for our annual family holiday however in comparison to other properties it left a lot to be desired.
There was an immediate damp / musky smell in the living spaces and bedroom cupboards, and the carpets werenât clean which was a concern as we had a toddler with us. When we arrived the house was basically empty save for a toilet roll in each bathroom and some hand towels. As the check in wasnât until 4pm we assumed (as seen in other properties) a small welcome package of a handful of tea bags / coffee and some milk but there was nothing. From experience, we have expected at least the bare essentials for the first night especially when some of the party were travelling +6 hours by car. We had to buy hand soap for every bathroom, milk, sugar, salt, pepper, tea towels, dishwasher tablets, washing machine pods, dish soap, anti bacterial cleaning spray, sponges, bin bags, and cling film. We werenât aware the garden was shared and felt overlooked by the people living in the attached / neighbouring property. However, the owners were nearby and helpful for anything that was needed which was handy and re-assuring, but definitely needed considering there was only one key available despite the booking being for 11 people. Finally, one of the houses locally had multiple dogs with almost constant barking and left dog mess frequently in the shared parking area which had to be cleaned up by our party. All of this took the shine from the holiday and we come to Cornwall every year but we wonât re-book this property which is a massive shame because it has the potential to be a beautiful holiday home / let.

A musky, stinky, tired and tacky Farmhouse with little to be desired but the grounds it is set in.
Ill equipped for disabled users due to 2 steps from the kitchen into the disabled bedroom, sitting room and living room (which are not detailed on the advert). The farmhouse is tired and in desperate need of updating. Marks on the walls, carpets and floors. An open grid in the downstairs bedroom made the room smell mouldy. Open cavities in the skirting boards which allowed frogs to visit. Carpets stained and grubby looking, beds old and uncomfortable. Sofas sagging and dirty. Floors unswept. Kitchen table was tacky to the touch. And made worse by the fact there was no cleaning products to maintain the property during our stay. Simple things like kitchen spray, bin bags, salt and pepper and oil were missing. WiFi wasnât very strong unless sat in the kitchen next to the router. Although physically close, the nearest shop was down a long and winding 60mph road with no footpaths. Which was dangerous with a disabled person and small children. The owners live directly opposite the property which we found intrusive. They have several large dogs which barked often. Overall very disappointing given the lack of cleanliness and lack of provision for disabled guests. We would not visit here again for free.

We booked this cottage not knowing too much about Millbrook.
There isnt a great deal in Millbrook itself but there is a fair bit around it. Mount Edgcume is a nice place to visit and Maker Heights was recommended but really wasnt for us. The views over the lake from the property were lovely and it is possible to go crabbing here at high tide which was fun. The property itself is nice but has a severe damp issue - you could see the water in the walls! The utility room was incredibly damp and the owners leave a dehumidifier on 24/7 to try to combat it. The garden is nice and mostly enclosed - an intrepid explorer would find a way out at the bottom so we just blocked that off with garden furniture. The patio door is old and broke during our stay. The owner was helpful and quick at arranging a handyman but really it needs replacing completely. The cleanliness overall was good but could be better. We (4 adults, 1 older teenager and 2 dogs) had a good week here but, if you have dogs, be aware there doesnt seem to be many walks locally for them. Most seem a drive out. Overall we were happy here and had a good holiday, theres just some things that need some TLC.
